Keane: We Could Have Scored Seven
Keane: We Could Have Scored Seven
Saturday, 12th Dec 2009 19:22

Boss Roy Keane felt the Blues could have scored six or seven goals against Blackpool rather than just three. The Town manager was pleased that Town have moved out of the bottom three but says it’s not something to celebrate.

Keane said: "We're out of the bottom three and it's a relief when you've been there since the start of the season. But it's not something we're proud of. Don't worry, we won't be celebrating.

"We could have won by six or 7-1, given the chances we created, especially in the second half.

"They were unbelievable, thank God they didn't cost us otherwise I'd be saying the same things I've been saying for the last few weeks.

"It would have been a nice boost for the players and sent a message out to everyone that we're not such a bad team. But let's not get too greedy or selfish. We'll take the three goals and move on."

The Blues boss says his team now need to extend their 10-game unbeaten run but must win more of their games: "It's nice but it's victories we need to move up the table.

"We've dropped some silly points but we're looking a lot more solid and we're getting there.

"Steady's goal coming so early was obviously a boost and that's what we've needed over the last few weeks.

"It wasn't really a chance, more an opportunist effort and we had some good chances to have tied the game up well before the end.

"Blackpool probably had more of the possession but Jack's goal summed up our performance, a quick break, good movement but he still had a lot to do when he went through and he took it well.”

Grant Leadbitter and Jon Walters picked up their fifth bookings of of the season and are out of next week's trip to Scunthorpe. Keane says they will be missed but that it gives other people a chance to stake their claim: "They are both important players for us but I'm not too worried about it, that's what you have a squad for and we'll get on with it.

"We have players who have been unlucky to miss out and it will give them an opportunity to come in and show what they can do."

Blackpool boss Ian Holloway admitted his side were very much second best: "We got what we deserved and I got what I deserved - nothing.

"I probably tinkered with the team a bit too much and we didn't have our chess pieces in the right places.

"Full credit to Ipswich. They capitalised on that, scoring a fantastic goal after a minute and then giving us an absolute rabbit punch just before half-time.

"But I didn't recognise it as the kind of performance we've been giving, so I'm a bit disappointed.

"You have to give Roy credit, his team credit and the fans credit. Things haven't been going as well as they would want here but the spirit they showed spoke volumes for the manager and the club."

I agree with the comments about Walters - he is not a striker. Best position is midfield.

much more energy in midfield with colbeck and peters, we did not allow blackpool to settle, garvan played well on the left he got some great crosses in and his workrate has improved, (has this been good man management ) i think walters would be ok up front alongside a prolific scorer

Interesting to see that Watford are reported to be prepared to listen to offers for Ellington for £300,000 in January. May be able to offload Lisbie to Colchester and buy him and make a profit.

Fantastic game, well deserved win.

I soooo want Keano to do well and I really feel we are turning the corner now, Norris and Civelli coming back will help!!

Less negativity please UEFA 81, we all need to stay positive- only 11 odd points of play offs for gods sake!

Pretty damned good! A pleasure to put the match photos on my Facebook page too, lol.

Nothing else to add - everybody else has said it. Suddenly the future looks brighter, eh?

upandtown - yes I also read about Ellington. Would be an excellent signing - exactly the player we need.

Slightly disagree about Walters being better on the right than up front. He pretty much won every ball in the air against their centre half, held the ball up for the midfield with some grate first touches and constantly worked the back 4 tirelessly yesterday. If he becomes a bit more clinical id much rather see him up front...

He should have scored yesterday and if it wasn't for the post and a last ditch tackle he would have had two.

I agree with uefa 81 on some points i ve been to watch sats win and tues draw, now for tues game how can you play a team who are that poor and still want to come back and watch it. It was a terrable game to have to sit and watch and if any true blue supporter can say anything postive about this performence then sorry you are brain dead. Sat good result againts a very poor defending team they made the ips front line look like 100 m chamipons and for the finishing well if we can score 1 in 12 chances then ya we might win a game or two. can people please explain why peters is playing he is a wide player who cant beat a player and cant cross for anything so is unable to create anything for the team im sure there must be a better player in the sunday morning league we could pick up. Im a big fan of supporting the team through thick and thin but have any of you people seen the league we are just out of the bottom 3 of the championship the championship after 21 games if you look back at jim joe royle or george burley they had no where near the money and done a much better job.

I normally support UEFA81 but credit where credit is due, RK does seem to be making some progress, but we are not a top side yet! Good win Satuday but poor draw Tuesday, must be frustrating to keep getting such varied performances and results, when you know we should be winning. The players must take some responsibility for that, it is however nice to see some confidence returning to the team.
Will I ever like Roy Keane............Naaaa not my kinda guy, sorry!
Will I always support him and the boys, of course cause I bleed blue & white.
So come on UEFA81 its nearly 2010 and altough old gits like us love the old Robson days best, it's time to get with it, you don't have to love keane but support the team, the current one that is!!!!

orwell12345 - What game were you watching on Saturday then, it was a Peters cross that set up Stead's goal! And I'll keep going back and spend my money after poor performances like Tuesday's game because I'm a Town fan and I'll be there no matter what. :)

devontractorboy - Very well put mate. :)

Well (unlike somebody), I was at the game and enjoyed it - as did everyone around me - even the usual moaners.

Plenty of effort from the whole team. Good performance. Good result. Great atmosphere.

More of the same please!

bjc - Important word you've used there mate, "could". You do know that it doesn't have the same definition as "will" don't you well. Well it doesn't...FACT MATE...so why don't you go and take your pessimistic views elsewhere eh? As to echo the sentiments of devontractorboy's last post, you don't have to like the situation hell you don't have to like Keane, just shut up and support the bloody team!

"THERE IS NO SUBSTITUTE FOR HARD WORK"

Great effort by the team. I would single out Walters, Peters and Stead for running their socks off.

Well done lads!

UEFA81.....what time does you space ship go home? As I feel you are just an Alien white mouse when it comes to football, where is your passion (been beaten out of you by your wife, you really are a big white mouse.....do you know where the saying white mouse comes from??...look it up!) If you can not support Roy and the boys then craw back under the rock you came from (not sure which planet…Mars?)

And come back out from it in ......emmmm Never!

What a sad little man you must be to spend so much time on this site winding people up, you need to look in the mirror and have a stern word with yourself.

Now finished my rant, I have been reading site all season and I had promised myself I would not comment until after Xmas but UEFA81 needs to take his medicine or after Xmas he may be in the Nut with all the bad eggs……. bit like Charlie and the chocolate factory!

So as a season ticket holder who go's to away matches too, if been a season of adjustments from the first game of the season for the fans the players and the Manager it's a bit like cleaning out your garden shed let me explain……

You open the door you think what a mess needs sorting out! I need some new tools and I am going to throw some of this lot out, (all good intentions - start of the season) then you empty the shed making a bigger mess. (At this point you wish you had not have tinkered — “some of you will never play again for me, a few games in)

You start to put the tools into place that you want to keep and a pile up the ones you want to junk as you near the end of the process you realise you can not afford to replace them all at once and start to put them back in the shed as they can do the job for me for a while given a good clean. (This is where we are today)

Attach human emotions ego's to the mix and what is now evident is Roy is the boss and if you ware an Ipswich shirt you play for the club and you put in a shift for 90mins for the fans. We may have the same tools at present in our shed at Portman road but my god…… the cobwebs have been cleaned down!

Given time I feel Roy will move this club to a new level I will be honest even I was concerned 5 games back ……..But I feel the story is about to unfold.

I will be blue until my heart stops………….Blue Army.

P.S. IF YOU DO NOT ATTEND A GAMES YOU DO NOT SEE WHAT IS REALLY HAPPENING, AS BETWEEN THE LINES IN NEWS PAPERS AND RADIO REPORTS YOUR NOT GETTING TO SEE OR FEEL THE REAL PICTURE, I REST MY CASE!

Credit where credit is due- this was a great game of footbal and I dearly hope it is the first of many. We have consistantly created chances, but failed to convert. Thankfully today we converted more than them. This has been coming becasue we have had the hunger for a solid win.

I'm still not a keane fan and have no great hopes of our long term position with regards himself, but I'm a tractor boy so well done bring on Scunthorpe!

matt_the_blue what game where you watching i belive a cross is when an attacking player puts the ball in to the 6 yard box or even in the 18 yard box for a forward to head or to attack the ball. steads goal was from outside the box so peters part was a pass, check your eyes or go to spec savers mate. i bet if anyone who goes to watch a ips game count how many time a cross from a wide area goes past the 1st defender and into an area for the strikers to attack the ball i bet it won't happen more then 2 or 3 times a game.

matt_the_blue added 14:14 - Dec 14
Whoa mate no need to get your panties in a twist, did your teacher give you a bad mark on your homework today or something? Ok so maybe it was a pass rather than a cross (you gonna have a go at Phil for using the phrase in his match report? Course you aren't) but it still renders your point about Peters being useless as moot as he set up a goal within the first 25 seconds of the game. From where I was sitting in the SBR stand it was a bloody good run up the outside and not a bad ball in. I'm not saying he's a superstar in the making but I am saying that he deserves more credit than people like yourself are giving him.

Oh, and I did go to Spec Savers. Bloody good service, and not a bad pair of specs either. :)
