Murphy Out for First Team Place From the Off
Murphy Out for First Team Place From the Off
Monday, 7th Dec 2009 12:50

New Town keeper Brian Murphy says he wants to make a first team place his own from the moment he is able to play for the Blues on January 1st. Murphy joins Town for what manager Roy Keane has called a “mini-pre-season” on Tuesday but isn’t eligible to play a match until the transfer window opens and his Bosman switch from Dublin side Bohemians is formalised.

In a lengthy interview with WLRFM in his native Waterford, carried out by reporter Matt Keane, a long-time Town fan, Murphy says he’s out to win a place in the team from the off: “It’s up to me to go over and work hard and to try and impress the manager from the first day, so when it comes to January 1st he’ll be playing me.

“That’s my aim, so it’s going to be a lot of hard work over the next few weeks and six months to try and get my place in the team and progress, otherwise I don’t think I’ll be a happy person.”

Murphy, who was an unused member of the Ireland squad for both the World Cup play-off games with France, says Town are beginning to see the fruits of the work carried out by new manager Roy Keane since the summer: “I think it’s a good time for the club. It probably needed time to change the way of thinking towards the game.

“Roy came in and he had to change the whole outlook of things and I think they are probably seeing the results of that now.”

Murphy, who previously played with Manchester City, Peterborough and Swansea in his earlier spell in England, looks set to make his Town debut in the FA Cup third round tie at Blackpool on January 2nd.

Be interesting to see how good this guy is - fingers crossed a good commander of his area, fast, accurate distribution as well as excellent shot stopping abilities.

Also could we see Martin and Priskin shipped out, except a loss and get rid.

Can we ship you out instead superblueflude?

superblueflude - ditto on Murphy. I think we should at least give Priskin a run in the reserves a la Wright and Garvan, maybe it will wake him up a bit and he'll start putting the effort in. He banged in 16 for Watford last season so I personally think it's down to laziness. As for Martin - I could go either way.

On the story - Cant wait to see what this guy has to offer!

On the debate - Priskin is our third highest scorer this season (on 2!) so why should we be looking to sell, if we gave him a solid run he may hit some form and actually start sticking them away! He should have started on Saturday, Stead was awful, and before anyone dares to comment, yes I was there! Martin has again, not been brilliant, but that doesn't mean he should be shipped out just because he hasn't been what was first expected, some games he has shown great ability and worth the money, but again, he needs a run (reserves even) to get some form together, although Civelli will more than likely take this position back when he is fit.

martin must be half decent player as he was a man utd res player imo he needs to bulk out a bit and get an end product to his dribbling ability . the forward play of town this season has been pretty shocking a bit hard to blame a new young player like martin. priskin needs a run of games and hopefully murphy will be good keeper. and we still have 4 m worth of injured players to come back

bleedblue - I don't deny Stead was awful, he's better used as an impact player. But I don't know if you saw Priskin against Sheff Weds, he was lazy as fcuk, needs a boot up the arse!

I think whether Murphy walks straight into the 1st team could be hugely dependant on whether Barrett-Lee continues to prove to be a reliable custodian. He's certainly made a very solid start by only conceeding once in nearly 2 games. If he continues to show that degree of reliability then there's no reason at all why he shouldn't earn himself a longer contract and retain the starting berth.

Did anybody see Begovic's performance against Burnley on MOTD? Can't see David James getting his place back too quickly at Pompey even when he is fit!

Arran-Lee-Barratt deserves his place at the moment although he was very lucky yesterday when the post came to his rescue twice.

Ipswich Kev, funny comment really considering I was talking about 2 players who really aren't showing any potential - I know Priskin scored 16 goals last year but look him, we can't give him the run of games that he may need as he is so lazy and contributes nothing to a game and Martin to me is definately a bad buy - however, maybe send them on loan give them games and get them back ready fo action - reserve football is terrible at the moment so these games wouldn't help.

I think this sounds good a player who wants to play for the team. With stead and priskin, stead didnt play well sat but he did do one thing which priskin has not yet shown in a ipswich top he was working for the ball and did a few good plays with walters, priskin does nothing at all expect stand there, but nvm. Yes i was at the game aswell sat before some 1 comments :). With Murphy he is pushing SG for the irish 1st place so all good.

Kingk. Why was Arran lucky? If the attempts had been inside the posts he may have saved them! Either way he'll have plenty of games to really test him out and maybe he'll get a new contract.
As for Priskin, i agree he needs to show more and while reserve games arent best place better than nothing. I'm not sure what to make of him. Maybe he doesnt like playing for Town or hasnt settled but his goals last season were impressive. As nobody else is firing RK should use him and the have Stead or Wickham on bench. I dont think Pablo will be staying too long.

How can a post 'come to your rescue', King Keano? That's a shot off target!

bleedblue, how you can say that Priskin should be given solid run is beyond me. The bloke looks tired and dis-interested the more I see him. I have never disliked a player in an Ipswich Town shirt so much.

On the story - I hope this turns out well. We need a sound keeper, and to be honest I don't think murphy will have much trouble getting straight into the side. One of the easiest goals he has probably had to obtain.

Considered our goalkeeping situation is so bad (according to many) it seems strange because I could swear 4 goals conceded in 9 games is actually a demonstration of very sold defensive foundation. Yes, I know our new found defence has been much much better, but how much have we improved at the back because we have a good organiser behind the back four?
