Keane: We Deserved the Win
Keane: We Deserved the Win
Sunday, 29th Nov 2009 18:50

Boss Roy Keane felt his side deserved the 2-1 victory at Cardiff City. Second half goals from Jon Walters and Jon Stead took the Blues to their second win of the season, Peter Whittingham having put the home side ahead in the first period.

Keane said: "I've had my share of luck here at Cardiff in the past but with the chances we had today I think we deserved to win.

"It was an open game but at half-time I told my players it would be a test of character and they have come through it well.

"The subs played a big part in the victory and, although I have been disappointed with results to date, I have never lost faith in the squad.

"Jon Walters has been a good leader over this difficult period and he scored a superb equaliser, while Jon Stead is starting to make a habit of scoring vital goals for us."

The Blues boss hopes the victory will help his side push on: "Our form has not been too bad but you hope the result can see us kick on now because it's wins we need.

"We had chances before our goal and Jon Walters has scored from the hardest one we had, but what pleased me was that we were creating chances.

"We may have had a bit of luck with the winner but Steady came on and made an impact. Our subs did well for us, Quinner was full of energy and Arran was solid.

"Stern John was a handful for their defence and I was pleased with him. We didn't want to play him for 90 minutes but, with Wrighty going off, we only had two changes we could make. He will be better for the game."

Keane says Wright’s knee injury will be assessed tomorrow: "Wrighty will have a scan on Monday. Obviously it's a blow losing him but we will know more tomorrow.”

The Town boss says Saturday's trip to the Millennium Stadium was intended to get his squad in the right frame of mind for the game: "Players sometimes need a break from the normal routine to relax them. That's why I took them to see Wales play Australia.

"I'm a big rugby fan anyway, so I enjoyed it. But I think the lads enjoyed the spectacle as well.

"They sampled the atmosphere of a 70,000 crowd, had the chance to see the Millennium Stadium.

"I'd like to think that most of them will maybe play before a crowd that size themselves one day."

Dave Jones was unhappy with his team’s second half display: "The players never made the right decisions after the break and it was a game we should never have lost.

"When the crowd went against the players they started to panic and some of them never wanted the ball.

"The midfield and frontline were non-existent and we hardly strung two passes together.

"When you are fighting hard to get something out of a game you have to win the ball in tackles and we didn't even do that.

"I have seen two stoppable goals go in and we need to hold on to the ball more and make the right decisions.

"Players will make mistakes but it is how you respond to them that count and everyone in the dressing room is responsible as that was our worst performance at this ground.

"At the moment we are easy to break down, but we are not a bad team collectively. We have to do better and if the players pull their fingers out we can soon get back on track."

Perhaps with the comments he's been coming up with, UEFA81's name should've been UEFA93 (look it up, you'll understand).

Fantastic result, well done lads.

Steady gave it 100% and deserves a starting place, not just being a super sub.

Well done the lads, but I just knew you pro Keaner's would be on here gloating & spraying abuse at people who don't like Keane!
Well face facts with only two wins you couldn't miss a rare opportunity could you!! I think the team is at a pivotal point in the season now and I really hope we go on winning and climb the table, but even if we do I will never like Keane or think he's the right guy for ITFC, if he does well for us great but I don't like the mans management style, outbursts about things he needn't comment on or the belief he's some kind of 'Hard Man'.
Meanwhile I'll keep supporting the team, avoid abusing fellow fans (because some of you on here are don't think before you type) & realise that it's only a game of football & there are much more important things in life! No really there are!!

A fantastic afternoon...I asked Keano to give me something to believe in last week and he has duely delivered! I said that John was a journeyman but Keane's comments were spot on..he did exactly what it said on the box - should have scored but John's contribution was significant. As someone said earlier we are looking more settled..telling that Garvan has perked up as well. Can't wait for Bristol...real sense of expectation and belief that we can actually win!!!
You got today spot on Keano!

Woohoo! Had a smile on my face all evening.
A tough place to go too... Cardiff tend to score for fun at home and don't leak many goals. I'm just glad we managed to maintain our lead for (what seemed like) several very looong minutes!
Defence is on the up, I used to look away whenever the ball went near Delaney, but his confidence is clearly growing and it seems like there's more communication across the back and with midfield.
I'm glad Garvan is back because he is a very capable player. Like others said, he can sometimes get lazy, and being frozen out was just the impetus he needed to sharpen up.
The dilemma now is with the keeper. If RW is out for any length of time, we need to hope David James makes a speedy recovery (and Begovic uses his saver return ticket back into town), or Lee-Barratt is on his own! A shot in the dark here, but is it worth enquiring about getting Mike Pollitt back for a few weeks, he wasn't that bad if i recall (eg, budgie match?).
4 points from Bristol and Peterborough?

YESSSS!!!!! Still can't believe we won! Hopefully the confidence is improving now after 7 games unbeaten. CGS; well done, your posts are good today, long may it continue. As for UEFA when will you ever write something which aint bollox. No wonder you've never been to a party or out on New Years Eve, who'd invite you? you'd ruin the night with your negative attitude.

Just been reading all the posts on here, agree with uefa, we have a hell of a mountain to climb. About the only thing the guy has said that makes sense, sadly for uefa no mates he wouldn't even be happy if we won the b@&*%y prem. Stop being so negative, yeah it's been tough, things not gone the way we thought they would. You could maybe blame the media for that, the pressure they heaped apon us pre season and also getting several new players together. Well it's happening now, we're climbing that mountain (one for uefa)
Glad CGS has had sex, really needed to know that lol just keep believing it's happening at last!!!

Was really not expecting us to get anything out of this let alone a win. Delighted with them, let's see how far we can go now.

Bring on Bristol City.

Tipped the right result AND the right first scorer for Town in our Swedish results competition. That's a massive 9 points! This takes me from a mediocre mid-table to 11th place. Just shows what a good result or two will do. COYB. [P.S. I'm a bit handicapped, because on principle I never bet on Town to lose!]

Excellent result. It always seems that we pull out the stops for the more difficult teams.Plenty to build on and the result can only be good for confidence. Its also evident that the team are playing for Keane ,its no mean feat to be 1 nil down at to a good side away to then come away with the win. My god though, their fans do seem bloody fickle.

Only 12 points off the playoffs.

We've lost less games than Cardiff who are 7th and conceeded less that Watford who are 9th.

Goals win games, hopefully the returning confidence will see to that.

Patience is a virtue.

I love this site. I knew that a win would see the pro-Keano's out in force laying into the anti-RK's and I wasn't disappointed.

One swallow doesn't make a summer, but put this into context, we were away at a ground where results are hard to get. We were up against a strike force that have been scoring for fun. We go a goal down and lose our first choice keeper. At this point I was all for turning off the radio. (I couldn't get to the match). But this was not a fluke, from the radio commentary we thoroughly deserved to win. We fought for every ball and outplayed Cardiff.

This has only got to be good. We are not far away from being a good side. It will only need a couple more wins to get the confidence back. It may not come against Bristol but we then have Perterborough and Scunny coming up. Blackpool will be tricky. The green shoots of recovery are there, and I am more confident that I was 20 minutes into yesterday's match!

I hope Richard Wright makes a speedy recovery as an emergency loan keeper looks unlikely with two registered pro's in the squad.
Get well soon Wrighty!

fantastic result lads, however one massive concern i have was the lack of enthusiasm from our expensive man up front "priskin" surely keano will start steady and stern with pablo and connor on bench against bristol wont he !

like many others keep saying tho onwards and upwards lads, Well done

Well done keano, well done lads - credit where it's due. Unbeaten in 7 is an achievement & I reckon we're Cardiff's bogey team now. I hope we can motor out of the bottom 3 & do the worzels next match.

Well said BergholtBlue. The baiting between Keane factions is all rather depressing. To suggest that Ipswich fans would be upset at an excellent win is a bit pathetic. Just because we have doubts about the manager doesn't mean we're not happy with a win (maybe UEFA81 excepted!)

For example, all I've ever done is post what I feel Keane has done wrong. I still think he made those mistakes. The fact that we got a good win doesn't take back those statements.

However, I have always said to give him a bit of time to see if we really are moving in the right direction. Yesterday's result was an excellent one and I'm as happy as the rest of you about that. Also sounds like we played well, and came back from behind.

All good stuff.

Keane has made mistakes, no doubt, and I totally disagree with those who turn Garvan's form into a Keane success. The fact that he set both goals up just shows what we've been missing for so long.

But anyway, I don't want to start a negative thread. It was a cracking result and let's hope that we really are moving forward from here. It's certainly a more important win than Derby, as that was an unimpressive win against an unimpressive team. This wasn't.

Did anyone notice 2 assists by Garvan? A little-known fact perhaps, but stats from last season showed he had the club's highest number of assists.
