Keane: It Should Have Been Three Points
Keane: It Should Have Been Three Points
Tuesday, 29th Sep 2009 23:45

Boss Roy Keane was again left bemoaning individual defensive errors after his side came within a couple of injury time minutes of recording their first league win of the season.

Keane said: “It should have been three points. We were close but not close enough. At 3-1 up we should have seen the game out but we conceded some bad goals. We gave the ball away cheaply and gave it away.

“It was disappointing but we'll look at the positives. The team expressed themselves and we played well, showing a spirit and tenacity.

“It's hard to take because in our predicament it's wins you need, not draws. But the signals are that we're making progress. Perhaps we just need a bit of luck and the rub of the green.

“Our supporters were excellent again and hopefully they can see a spirit, desire and attitude among the players that says we're all in it together.

"Does it feel like a defeat? Probably not because we've scored three goals away from home but there was a spell in the second half where we were wanting one or two players to see the game through but nobody did tonight. It's very disappointing."

Sheffield United assistant manager Sam Ellis was delighted to grab the draw: "We won't get a better point all season. To not play well and be second best all night shows the character of the team and that's what got us the point here."

We are only 11 points from the play off places and we out played the team in that last play off place.

We will get there, don't worry folks it will all come together soon, very soon.

Agree, wrighty has been quality, but you can not hide behind the fact that he cost us the points. When you are under pressure like that in the last ten minutes, you can not switch off and make mistakes, that win would have been crucial, they almost tasted it, but he dropped a clanger, and cost us the points. Like the gaffer he must stand up and be responsible for his mistake.

We had that in the bag, but its gone now, point is better than what i expected to happen.

They will hit back in October, have a lot of faith in that happening.

soon ,very soon , blue- em -away, but thats a bit like seeing the sign behind the bar in your local that say,s FREE BEER TOMORROW,the win must come at some stage , it will probably be a game we are not expecting to win ,and we will win against run of play .

Wrighty had a 'mare in goal. A big, experienced goalie like him should never be barged off the ball and his "Dracula" tendencies (no good with crosses) must be unnerving for the rest of the team. If we don't get a result at Barnsley, I fear for RK.

I know that I've made the point before, but it would help if the supporters (clue there) at PR did not get on the team's back when things go wrong. I was at the Newcastle game and was really disappointed at the abuse that was being hurled at our players and RK as soon as we conceded the first goal.

I know that they are a bunch of overpaid nancy-boys. But they are OUR overpaid nancy-boys.

Absolutely gutted to drop 2 points, i am sure we all are.
However anyone who says that they would not have taken a point before kick off is a liar!
Sheff Utd are a good team,i expect them to be there or there abouts at the end of the season, even if they didnt play well last night, 3 goals at Bramall Lane, will not be repeated too often by other teams i reckon.

RK is slowly getting it right, if he can instill a bit of confidence in his team, and point the above facts out to them, i am sure the individual errors will soon stop.

Its time to stop all of this doom and gloom, I fully expect 3 points on Saturday, even if Barnsley are improving, so are we!

One last thing, several people have posted how RK gets on his players back and destroys confidence......aren't the negative posters doing the same thing?

Get behind your team....COYB!!!!!

Oh almost forgot...pleased for Mcauley.
Some of the abuse he has got on here, i wouldn't have wished on a Scummer up the A140!

Barnsley & Watford will be very hard games! But . . . . We're getting there. Nice to see McAuley on the score sheet!

I'd like to see a Dominant CB arrive this week to allow Bruce to take up the roll that Trotter has had in font of Defence. McAuley will come good and has shown sparks of last season late form, Smith & Pim remain on the fringes for me with Wright head and shoulders above them for LB . .

We'll need to ship out Defenders is any come in?

Not nice to see Ipswich Bottom going into October! Didn't we Sack Burley for less after 10 games ? Pse no sackings - that's pathetic and will not help. Time will tell and I can see a stronger Town now than I have for a long time..

WELL DONE TOWN great away point , 3 or maybe 4 wins out of next 4 games will see us where we should be in the league and the confidence coming back .
Thought Wright should have come on after they scored second , old experienced head to steady ship a little ,bringing on Counago for 5 mins when we are leading dont get ?
And lets not turn on Wrighty as we have done McCauley they have both done well for the club everyone makes mistakes, midfielders bad pass ,striker missings chances its just the back four is highlighted more .
Looking forward to a good October or a change !!

MockeryGap - why do you think he made that substitution? Trying to see out a bit of time obviously, bringing on a player who potentially has the ability to hold the ball up well. Obvious. Look, I'm gutted about dropping 2 points last night, but it winds me up how people can still point the finger at Keane after what happened last night. I wasn't there, but it sounds like the played really well, so how about a bit of credit where it's due, rather than all this hate-mongering towards Keane for a change. I saw the goals, and the 3rd was a big cock up by Wrighty - simple as that. Hopw that can be Keanes fault when he's stood 60 yards away on the touchline is beyond me!

Yes we scored 3 goals, which against most teams away from home would be a win. But i can only question Richard Wrights quality of late. He always seems to be off his line, he comes out of his 6 yard box like a headless chicken, and at times his handleing of the ball is terrible, this was shown last night, against newcastle and also numourous other times this season but we got away with it the previous times.

I would also like to mention a story in the daily mail 2 weeks ago with an interview with shane supple, he said one of the reasons he left was because a lot of the players didnt care we won or lost. i think that says it all!

Surco72, Couldn't agree more.

Wrighty fumble is one he'd take day in day out . . but he's a rock for us and least we forget that! McAuley was in the chase for MoM with a solid show and goal to boot as he cleaned up any high ball attacks and directed traffic from his 'non captaincy' role again!

No wonder they looked nervy in the last moments, the Crap they have to listen to from the stands at PR is shocking. I just don't get paying good money to hurl abuse at the team you 'support'

Hopefully, the next home game we'll bag 3 points and normal service will resume from the Sir Bobby Robson stand!

Certainly more positives than negatives from last night. If the team was more confident we would not have conceded 2 goals in the last 13 minutes. Hopefully a new CB loanee will shore up the defence. Wright appears to have had a howler, still remember his performance against Albion tho'.

Time to get behind the manager and team and stop the moaning! If things have not improved by Christmas that's a different matter!

In a strange kind of way i am loving this, life has downs as well as ups and how u deal wiv the downs says a lot about a person. The team showed real balls after saturday's result and i am confident we are going to hav a really exciting and tough as nails (mentally) team to watch

To come away from Sheffield with a point is a good result - but yet again it was thrown away by school boy errors.

Perhaps Keane has finally realised that his job is on the line after his meeting with ME at the weekend and the rumblings that Hope Powell is looking for a job!! This would be the kind of headline that ME would relish - he has spent circa £10m on bringing in Keane and letting him buy the Sunderland and Ireland rejects and various other non performers but in doing so his company profile has gone through the roof!! For his £10m he had global coverage of the ME brand via TV, News media and the Internet so if Keane goes (or walks whichever comes first!?) he can then bring in the first female manager he will then get the advertsing coverage of the ME brand once again - that kind of coverage is well worth the money to a savi business man.

In the mean time give Keane this month to see if he can turn it around and if the new signings arrive by the weekend........

ScottyBlue87 - that story about Supple and players not caring whether they won or lost seems to have referred to a few years ago (possibly Jim's early period). With any luck most (or all) of those players have now gone, but sadly Supple never recovered the faith.

I can't believe some people are calling for Wrighty's head, you call yourself supporters??? It's an absolute disgrace!

He's making mistakes because he, like the rest of the team, are low on confidence. You cannot question he is an excellent keeper and usually so reliable.

We need a strong experienced CB in but more than anything we need a bit of luck to get that first win then the season will kick on.

I had never felt more gutted than last night but the signs are very encouraging and that win is just around the corner, it's gonna feel like winning the play offs again when we do get it!!

Your only as good as your last result...Good times ahead...as people have mentioned their where many exciting things coming out of last night performance especially going forward.

Rosenior and edwards down the right are working together especially on the break, Leadbitter in the middle osses quality the fact that he now takes all the dead balls shows his quality and his goal was the same.

walters and priskin can ever improve,(walters a very good leader)

I like Trotter in the middle as long as he keeps it simple his height can really help.

at the back, Mccaully actually had a good game- his goal was certainly one he ows us. t smith played better than ive seen him. and j peters really did look alright.

As for Wrighty- as people have also said, if it wasn't for one or two great saves it could have been a different story. His blunder for the final goal is something he's just got 2 cut out, we all know how good a player he is. His delivery in the first half picking out Walters and Edwards as exceptional.

As a whole alot to take, the first 3 points is round the corner, if we cut out the sloppy “individual errors”rk we could give somebody a hiding. I think for the first time in along time RK will stick with the same team and hopefully 3 points at Barnsley.

keep the faith..In Ipswich we stand

Its ridiculous to blame Wrighty for last night.Despite finishing 9th last season the actual difference in points between us and the relegation places wasnt that great and it was only the efforts of, our player of the season, that kept us from a relegation battle. I dont like being where we are at the moment but if there is one thing that really is getting to me is the attitude and negativity of some fans. You are meant to be supporters so .....here's a wild thought -support. See you at Barnsley.

Maybe RK can stick with the vast majority of this team & see how far we can go.
I still think we can get a run going & 80 points is possible at the end of the season

Came on here expecting the worst today, but fair play, everyone's really upbeat for a change.

So last nite, as heartbreaking as it was, how many positives can we take away from that game?!

McAuley looking sound and confident, not just talking bout his goal, as within the 1st 5 mins he had about 4 clearnces to deal with and he dealt with them all brilliantly. Took his goal well and I dont think he was to blame for any of the goals.

Leadbitter is looking a sound buy and the kind of replacement we desperatly needed for Norris, though when he comes back the midfield will be a force to reckoned with.

Walters, I dont care what anyone says, looks best upfront and not having long balls hoofed up to him. Took his goal well, so that brings him up to 4 goals in 10 league match's now. Still believe he's the boy to get us 20 a season with the right service. Stead, as Brian Hamilton said, changed the game for us and looked the buisness. Maybe he had a point to prove to united, maybe a point to Keano, either way he's trying his best, and shouldn't be slated.

Would like to see the same line up for Barnsley, though with the 2 loan signings coming in, (hopefully 1 of them being a centre back with real leadership qualities) would like that player to come in alongside McAuley.

Only complaint is, im afraid, Wrighty. Best shot stopper outside the prem, but decision making has been poor. However with new cb (fingers crossed) coming in, again might bring some confidence to whole defence.

Gutted bout result but, like we all said, would have taken a point up bramell lane, and there wont be many teams who score 3 goals up there.

All in all, things WILL change now.

Encouraging signs going forward but the defence as woeful as ever. Yes, I would have taken a point before the game and to go 3:1 up with only 20 mins remaining certainly had the heart pounding - but even then I just knew we would screw it up.

I'll believe these new loan signings when (or if) we see them.

At the end of the day it's results that matter - not performances. Still no win in 10 games and bottom of the league.

Hmmmm...
