Keane: Thatcher is Not in My Plans
Keane: Thatcher is Not in My Plans
Tuesday, 15th Sep 2009 08:00

Town boss Roy Keane says left-back Ben Thatcher is currently not in his plans, despite having returned to fitness after last season’s knee ligament injury. The veteran former Welsh international has not featured for either the reserves or first team this season.

Keane confirmed that the 33-year-old is fit but says he is not in his thoughts for inclusion in his squad at the present time: “Not at the moment, no.”

Earlier in the summer, Thatcher was reported to be unwilling to relocate to Suffolk, something Keane wants all his players to do, but the Blues boss says this isn’t entirely the reason for the defender’s exclusion: “It’ll be lots of issues. Players have got to give themselves a chance, whether it’s players travelling, their attitude to training or being on time for training. That all comes into the reckoning if you want to be in my team.

“There’s lots of issues with lots of players, although generally speaking I’m delighted with the group, but there’ll always be one or two you need a bit more from.”

Thatcher, who picked up his knee injury in last season’s 3-2 derby victory over Norwich City, last played a game when the reserves took on Bury Town in a pre-season friendly on August 4th when he played 62 minutes before being replaced.

Really? I think he did well last season. Was solid most of the time and a better left back than Delaney. Bad decision.

Reading bewteen the lines, I expect he turns up late for training, and doesn't try hard enough, so Roy is right to leave him out. Which is a pity, because he is our best left back, and with lots of Premier league experience. Indeed on the face of it, he's a Roy Keane type player - hard, no nonsense, but probably doesn't respect RKs authority.

So...we have no out-and-out left back.

And people are happy.

3 left backs at the club last season...RK lets 2 go, and the 3rd is unwilling to relocate to Suffolk - surely RK would have realised he'd need to sign a specialist left back as early as the Summer? (if he considers Delaney to be a left-back, I'm deeply concerned...)

Muddling along playing various centre-backs out of position at left back hasn't helped our start to the season - if Thatcher's not in RK's plans, we need to get someone else in!

Blueoveru, is the replacement for Thatcher better than him? Must be seen as he's a Keane signing and not a Magilton signing? More cracking man management from the god like Keane, so that's Thatcher, Garvan, Stead all frozen out, and not to mention he's destroyed the confidence of last years captain. Still sure there is some more sunderland players we can sign.

Dannym09 - Taricco would be nice right now! Unfortunately I think he retired through injury, didn't he?

I agree that our LB position is problematic .... but saying that, maybe Keano is envisaging Civelli covering that area as LWB when he returns (with Martin playing LW up ahead of him), in which case it is short term cover that we need. David Wright, Pim and Tommy Smith can cover, but maybe we do need a loan signing till January if Mrs Thatcher is not gonna play...

Easily Jim's worst signing..hasn't surprised me how much time he's spent out injured..pay him off and let him go..still say we should've kept Harding.

Thatcher is an average left back for this division. Then again i'd rather have an average left-back then a liability (Delaney)
