Keane Hoping to Sign Keeper Today
Keane Hoping to Sign Keeper Today

Town boss Roy Keane hopes to sign a new goalkeeper as a replacement for the retiring Shane Supple later today. The new addition looks likely to be a loan or short-term signing with Bohemians keeper Brian Murphy set to join the Blues in November.

There appears to have been no move to hasten Murphy’s switch from the League of Ireland club, which will see him move to Portman Road at the end of the Irish season in November but not be available to play until the transfer window reopens in January.

Keane hopes to have the new man in his squad for Saturday’s live Sky game at West Brom: “We’ll probably have news on a new goalkeeper later today. We certainly need cover, we’ve only got young Irish keeper Ian McLoughlin, who played for the reserves the other day, so we’ll certainly have to get something sorted out by this afternoon.

“There’s a lot of keepers out there available, who have maybe not have been fixed up by clubs, and we’ll hopefully get that sorted later today.”

Keane says Shane Supple only told him he wanted to quit football earlier this week: “I spoke with Shane on Wednesday morning, he came and told me of his decision. Obviously I was surprised. I’ve found him to be an excellent lad, a really good pro who trained well.

“He gave me his reasons. I’m disappointed, but we’ve got to respect the boy’s decision. I think it was brave of him. A lot of people go through life doing something they don’t necessarily want to do and he’s been brave enough to say that football’s not for him. He said he’d been thinking about it for a year or two.

“I think he’ll do well whatever he decides to do because he’s an intelligent boy and everyone from Ipswich wishes him well.”

Keane says that the former Irish U21 keeper would be welcome back at Portman Road if changed his mind and understood that going to university was very much in Supple’s thoughts. It’s well known that the Dubliner has a strong interest in cookery with speculation this morning suggesting that Supple may look in that direction for his future career.

The Town boss says he is looking to make further additions to his squad before the transfer window closes in just over a week’s time: “I hope so, but we’ll have to see what players might be available, the price that’s involved, the wages and obviously I’ll sit down with the chief executive and speak to the owner.

“I need to wheel and deal like every other manager. There’s not millions to be spent, whether we’re looking at loan players or young players who mightn’t be on unbelievable wages.

“We’re weighing up all our options at the moment, but we certainly don’t want to panic due to one or two of our results not going our way and bring four or five players in.

“I’m hoping that in the next week or so there might be one or two players, strong characters coming into the club.”

Keane appeared to rule out Daryl Murphy joining the club despite Sunderland manager Steve Bruce revealing that talks were ongoing earlier in the week: “I speak to Brucey on a regular basis on lots of stuff, but I wouldn’t imagine anything happening with that one.”

The Blues boss also played down the chances of Giovani Dos Santos re-signing on loan: “Very, very, very slim, I would have thought. Very slim.”

Keane says there has been no new interest in current members of his squad, while he confirmed that he had received a letter from the FA asking him to explain his comments regarding referee Keith Hill prior to Tuesday’s game with Crystal Palace, but is not facing any charge.

Total fair play to the guy, I know so many people who don't like/hate what they do and I also know people who have given up "a really good job" and gone and done something totally different and I know for a fact that they are happier and more content than people who may have a few extra quid in thier pockets. Hope he does really well at Uni, being a chef or whatever. You get one shot at life and you spent the vast majority working so you have to enjoy what you do - good luck to him!

You wont kneed to worry about a keeper Roy,if you concentrate more on the back four, how about getting truly top quality Centre & Left Backs = problem solved.

Get Gio back & get Sol Cambell in, that's all we need. A decent centre half & someone creative.

A bit surprised he only notified Keano on Wednesday and the announcement was made on Thursday. I hope he was offered more time to reflect on his decision after all registration for University/College does not start until next month. Still best of luck with your future Shane.

Hopefully we can bring in a decent keeper to push Dodgey Dickie for his place as he has been trying to play like a sweeper again and far from his best, along with two quality signings we should start to get it together.Good luck again Shane

All the best to Shane, he's had the patience of a saint during his time at the club, and i'm sure it took him a long time to decide he didn't want to do something he wasn't enjoying anymore, particularly in such a 'well-paid' job.
So i was thinking, given the press confusion surrounding the whole Brian Murphy/Darly Murphy thing, i'm waiting for the papers to report Bryan Gunn as our new signing in goal... Hehehe

Well done Roy. Offering Shane a couple of weeks off to reflect was the right thing to do. ITFC could do no more.

People need to get real about Gio. Obviously the club want him BUT does he want to come back? Would Spurs prefer to send him to a club at a higher level than us? It's obviously out of our hands!

I pleased that Roy has mentioned maybe one or two strong characters coming to the club. I've been sounding like a stuck record for the past 2-3 years now that our young growing squad needs a couple of seasoned pros, 30+ years old, who shrug off confidence issues, know how to grind a promotion out and who know how to drag the team back round from being a goal down whatever the odds & circumstances. Signings/loanees like Matt Elliot & Dave Unsworth (but obviously not them now).

Shane shouldn't give up football, he could easily find another club, i'm sure

agree with fenboyblue - we need some steel and experiencein the team , hopefully a leader that can replace McAuley as captain.

Could do a lot worse than bringing Sol to the club, and saw the other day Dietmar Hamann is a free agent as well, might have a season or two left in him, although not sure if he would want to play in the championship. Those two and Jan Vennegoor of Hesselink...if he is still available, would be three experienced players all on a free transfer, what we save on the transfer fees could cover their wage expenses. They could only strengthen our squad and as we have quite a young team at the moment their experience and leadership down the spine of the team could make all the difference!!!

Sounds like Gio is a done deal!

Are we sure the keeper is Murphy, Roy hinted there's a lot of keepers without a club but Murphy is with Bohemians??! Maybe a bluff?

Hoping Daryl Murphy comes off as well, we could do with some presence on the left of the front three , then Martin could move in-field. Plus a midfield general as Healy is too slow. Another LB would also be good but unlikely as Keane wouldn't admit to Delaney not being good enough after spending so much on him.

I'd go with Blue_Showboat - good call if they're available and up for it. It might also make other possible signings look at us more seriously

I WOULD LOVE to see hamaan come to the club, ok he's 35 but defo a season maybe 2 in him at this level. experienced and talented i think him and garvan would be a good combo. regarding upfront i still believe were ok but either bent or mcshefferey (not both) wouldnt hurt!!!

I hear Bryan Gunn's available - he's even scored for us in the past...

Actually Gunn didn't score. He completely missed the ball. The goal was credited to Ullathorne.
