Academy coach Tony Humes has left the club in the wake of the recent review of the club's youth set-up. Humes took over as academy boss in 2006 after Bryan Klug became first team coach, having joined the staff in 2002 from Wrexham's centre of excellence.

A club spokesman confirmed that the former central defender is no longer at the club but would not go into greater detail: "Matters between the club and its employees are confidential. Therefore, we have no further comment to make at this time.”

Recently, after the appointment of John Gorman as assistant manager, Bryan Klug moved to a new role as head of football development, which will see him oversee coaching development, scouting and fitness from the first team to the academy.

In November, chief executive Derek Bowden told TWTD that while reports of sweeping cuts throughout the academy were incorrect, a review was taking place: "What we want is to have a very efficiently run academy and that's what we're in the process of looking at right now, and that's where this speculation has come from. We're talking to people at the academy about how we can run it in the optimum fashion.

”It's no different to what we've previously done in sales and marketing and in retail, and even with the first team. We would have looked at it regardless of any investment. We're looking at the best way to run our business across every department.

"If the objective for the club is to grow players that can play in the Premier League, or if they're not good enough for that level have some sale value in the lower leagues, then our view is that the academy is the best route.”
