Football writer and architectural historian Simon Inglis will be speaking at Ipswich Town Hall on Thursday, 7th December (7-9pm). Inglis's illustrated talk is one aspect of Ipswich Museum's IPSWICH@PLAY Community Studies Project.

Inglis is best known for his books on UK stadia including the seminal Football Grounds of Britain and Engineering Archie: Archibald Leitch - Football Ground Designer.

His new book, The Best of Charles Buchan's Football Monthly, is available via TWTD for the bargain price of £16.14 and is the latest in the Played in Britain series.

Charles Buchan's Football Monthly was Britain's first sports glossy magazine, launched in September 1951. The book picks the best from the magazine's 20-year history: the articles, the beautifully hand-tinted player portraits, the cartoons, adverts and readers letters from such football mad schoolboys as little Johnny Motson, Sebastian Faulks, Nick Owen and John Hegley.

The evening will also provide an opportunity for a private viewing of the IPSWICH@PLAY exhibition. People have scoured their lofts, garages and cupboards for pictures, memorabilia or anything else linked to their personal sporting histories and to the town's sporting heritage.

The display is constantly changing as items are added — everything from speedway bikes to rollerskates to photos of Portman Road in times past and even back issues of TWTD.
