Steve's background is interesting. There's about 2000 children born during or shortly after the Second World War to white British mothers and African-American GI fathers. Although Britain's not quite so segregated as the USA in the 1940s, it's still a very difficult history. Mostly marriages are made socially impossible and the fathers are generally posted back to the United States when their tour of duty ends. There's a push and shove between the British and US governments as to whether the children should be sent to the US or not, many sadly ending up in Children's Homes. Those that remain with their mothers facing awful prejudice (them and their mums).
