The Midfield Problem and really Missing Downes at Present 21:32 - Oct 31 with 491 viewsmattyhollandsirish

For all the good Bishop and Dozzell have done so far this season and the fact it's great to see them playing regularly, a midfield of them and one other is where I think we're going to struggle based on what we've seen so far.

Despite essentially playing 4-5-1 most of the time (as we're certainly not playing 3 up top), we're regularly overran in midfield and really struggle to get a foothold in games. The fact we've been completely outplayed by a team today that was in League 2 last season, the same against MK Dons (before going down to 10) and hardly been convincing in the other home games against what you'd say were poor teams, does maybe suggest there's an issue.

Dozzell often near enough plays as a sweeper and is so deep that he struggles to influence anything higher up the field. Bishop is undoubtedly a good player at this level but out of possession, I don't think either and any of Nolan/Huws/Judge etc offer any bite to the midfield whatsoever and we seem to be quite an nice team to play against.

The fact that we've had no positive reaction at all in the only two games we've gone behind in so far this season does also question whether we've got the heart for a long hard season.

A good result against Sunderland would do wonders for the confidence, but failing that, hurry up back Downes!
