Weak pre-season is looking poor in comparison 08:54 - Jul 16 with 3738 viewsunstableblue

A lot of our championship rivals seem to have lined up pre-season games against notable European side and a Premier League side:

Villa - Vitesse Arnhem, Malaga, Watford
Brentford - Celts Vigo, Southampton
Forest - Girona, Burnley
Norwich - Brighton
Sunderland - Celtic
Fulham - Chelsea, West Ham, Wolfsburg
Preston - Burnley
Derby - Hoffenhein, Kaiserslautern

It seems only Neal Warnocks Cardiff are going with a similar low key approach to Town.

It's completely meaningless. Peterborough and Charlton away will be good tests. It's all about fitness and sharpness and getting a feel for playing together. There's little value in chasing shadows against Chelsea IMO.

It would be nice to have a decent home friendly the week before the season to ramp it up and give the fans something to watxh

It would be, but at the same time getting arses whooped by Chelsea (Fulham lost 8-2 yesterday) isn't a great prep for players and fans either

Agree it is a mistake not having a home friendly, especially when some membership options had a free ticket for a home friendly as part of the offer

That's a real PR balls up, but it's a different issue. From a team preparation perspective I don't think it matters. if it means the pitch is in better condition for the season then great. The club of course shouldn't have offered that perk and not backed it up.

They did state "if there is a home friendly".

Fulham friendly was behind closed doors at Chelsea training ground so not quite the same - and this early in pre season is just a warm up

Probably to give the pitch more time to recover following Elton's shenanigans

It would be nice getting a German or Scandinavian team over for a late pre-season homer.

Spot on Clive Baker, its about getting the players ready and match sharp for the new season. I'd prefer us to play League 1 sides, as it is more likely they'll put out their strongest sides.

I know that was discussed, as was asking for the first game being played away, but ultimately they decided that was unnecessary and they were looking at a game. However, the game they were lining up broke down due to issues at the other end and I think Mick wanted the programme sorted out early this year - it ended up being very last minute last year for similar reasons - so they opted to play at Charlton in the final game.

Are you saying we aren't having the Lazio friendly this year?
