I've avoided creating new threads on Gaza up to now, and instead posted new developments on the main Palestinian thread but I think the following (which I've also posted there) deserves a thread of its own.
The US defense secretary, Lloyd Austin, said earlier today that more than 25,000 women and children had been killed by Israel since 7 October 2023, adding that Israel can and should do more to protect civilians.
During a US congressional hearing (ostensibly about his health), Austin was asked how many Palestinian women and children had been killed by Israel, Reuters reports.
He said: "It is over 25,000."
That's an absolutely astonishing figure, as it must be impossible to regard these as Hamas fighters. There will no doubt be thousand of innocent men killed as well, in addition to members of Hamas.

Looks like some rowing back. Maybe it was a genuine (but incompetent) mistake or maybe the truth hurts. This from a Pentagon spokesman, according to Haaretz.

We cannot independently verify these Gaza casualty figures."
As it is, in late October, just weeks after the war started, Biden said: “I have no confidence in the number that the Palestinians are using.”
That changed in February when Biden apparently accepted a number close to the Gaza health ministry’s count of roughly 28,000 deaths.
“Too many, too many of the over 27,000 Palestinians killed in this conflict have been innocent civilians and children, including thousands of children,” the president said on Feb. 12 following a meeting with King Abdullah II of Jordan.
There was then some rowing back when National Security Council spokesman John Kirby told reporters after the about-face, “The president was referring to publicly available data about the total number of casualties.”
It's almost as if they want the truth to be known, but then have second thoughts when it's out there.

In the last few days we have had three sets of figures on Gaza deaths.
Hamaz give an overall total of 30,000 US total women & children 25,000 Israel claim to have killed 10,000 Hamaz

If Israel are claiming they've killed 10,000 Hamas fighters, and ignoring everyone else that they've killed then thats a porky in and of its self.
If The US are then claiming 25k women and children, then I'd think the figure is close to the 30k claimed by Hamas, probably around 27k.
So if Hamas & US figures correlate no more than 5,000 adult males have been killed and probable less than a third of those would be Hamas. Israel must be including youths & children in their calculations.

The health ministry figures include only those who reach hospital morgues, and with barely functioning hospitals, people trapped under buildings, damaged ambulances and ambulances restricted in where they can go, there will be thousands not included in the figures.
Given all this, it is perfectly credible that 25,000 women and children have been killed, and there will also be thousands of innocent males killed, as well as Hamas fighters.
And leaving aside direct casualties, there are now reports of babies dying from malnutrition (10 have been reported at one hospital in the last couple of days) and people with health conditions dying in tents.

Given he was happy to be a mouthpiece for Assad who gassed his own people, and responsible for a civil war that had killed over half a million Muslims, yes it is hard to see why people voted for him. It’s a shame he wasn’t so eager to stand up for Muslims massacred by Assad and his allies (even down to unfounded anti semitic conspiracy theories that in fact Israel gassed Syrians and not his pal Assad).
Another one who’s gone so far down the anti western rabbit hole he’s found himself on the side of butchers and despots. Whilst the west has been completely feeble in criticism of Israel’s conduct, he has shown himself willing to excuse those actually doing the killing.

One thing I can say in favour of the MP for Rochdale is that he has shown enough respect for the tens of thousands of innocent children (victims of Israeli genocide) by not trying to hijack this thread in order to talk about the rights or wrongs of George Galloway.
