The two lead characters, rather confusingly called Bucky and Buck were real pilots in the 100th bomb group - so to a certain extent it should be quite factual.

It’s certainly been a long time in the making - they were visiting Duxford over five years ago. The irony of the USAAF, as I told Tom Hanks at the time is that the air war was won by USAAF fighter groups knocking the Luftwaffe out of the skies and on the ground - and the series should have been based on a fighter group such as the one based at Debden.

I'm sure Mr Hanks enjoyed your expertise on all matters as much as we do.

No idea when I began here, was a very long time ago. Previously known as Spirit_of_81. Love cheese, hate the colour of it, this is why it requires some blue in it.

While flying unescorted over Germany without fighter cover was not sustainable (see Schweinfurt raids) there was much more to the air war over Europe than the brilliant work of USAAF fighters, specifically the P51, gaining air superiority. The destruction wreaked by B17s, B24s, B26s, Bomber Command, ground attack P47s and Typhoons to name but a few were all part of it.

The ability to out produce Germany in aircraft and trained pilots and crews by the allies meant the Germans stood no chance whatsoever. The structure of the Luftwaffe didn’t help, nor did political interference and shortage of certain raw materials including oil by 1945. The reality was the Luftwaffe was fatally undermined in 1940 and bled dry by 1944.

I am looking forward to the programme. The B17s in the trailers are F models and camouflaged which suggests it’s set 1943/44. The bravery of the 8th air force, their professionalism and training is without question.

One of the best films on this is 12 O’clock High (Gregory Peck).

Ah, Gregory Peck, like James mason or John Mills, watchable in anything he's done. I watched The Big Country again the other day, superb. Scariest bit, it was made in 1958, so MC Tunes sample of the theme on ;The Only Rhyme that Bites' was 32 years in the future.. We're now 34 years on from Tunes!!!

A excellent little shown film is the 80s one based on a true story called The Sea Wolves. The Peckmeister is great in that. And of course The Guns of Navarone. Top actor.
