Statistical comparison with last Championship season 20:21 - Jun 1 with 25441 viewsNthsuffolkblue

Just been looking at who replaces who if I make the comparison with last time we were in the Championship.

Many of the opposition are the same sides so need no replacement. However, 8 do. I have roughly gone with the most recent promoted replacing the longest ago relegated but not been especially careful to check on this.

I make it:

Plymouth replace Derby
Cardiff replace Bolton
Huddersfield replace Wigan
Watford replace Reading
Coventry replace Forest
Sunderland replace Brentford
Southampton replace Villa
Leicester replace Sheff Utd

Of course the comparison will be with a season in which we got a miserable 31 pts, GF 36, GD -41.

We will need something like 14 more points to stay up, +44 (Edited from +29 - see below) for the play offs and +60 to be talking automatic. I am looking forward to the comparison anyway.

Stats for the week...

Other than Leicester this season, we have had the best start to a Championship season after 20 matches by any club in the past 20 seasons.

https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/championship/saisonstarts/wettbewerb/GB2

Only including teams in 2nd place in the 2nd tier of English football, the last time a team started as well as Ipswich at this stage of a season (adjusting for 2 or 3 points for a win), was Manchester United in 1905/1906.

Projected totals are now 110 Points, 99 Goals

Halfway point and a very healthy total despite another disappointing par and getting doubled.

Par for Leicester at PR on Tuesday evening (replacing Sheffield United) 1-1. Despite two matches without a win, I would take a point from that. At least a 4 point gap to third by the end of that match come what may. We have some breathing space thanks to our fantastic form so far this season.

Halfway through the season, so an update on the few stats I've provided in earlier posts:

Comparison with our last Championship season after the same number of games - big contrast from being rock bottom and 5 points from safety...

23 Bolton 23 2 2 7 (6 15) 2 4 6 (9 16) -16 18
24 Ipswich Town 23 1 7 4 (11 16) 1 2 8 (8 22) -19 15

1 Leicester City 23 10 0 2 (23 6) 9 1 1 (24 10) +31 58
2 Ipswich Town 23 9 1 1 (32 19) 7 3 2 (15 13) +15 52

So as well as the Pd 23; PTS +37; GD +30; GF +27 calculated by Nthsuffolkblue which factors in the opposition, we have pretty similar stats, Pd 23; PTS +37; GD +34; GF +28 if you just consider the number of games.

For those who like to compare with other teams in other seasons, we have slipped to 6th in this table of the best starts to a Championship season in the past 20 seasons after 23 games, but all the teams above us were top of the table with those number of points.

(Full table here: https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/championship/saisonstarts/wettbewerb/GB2 )

Just to put into perspective how good a start we've had to the season, the League One Table after 23 games last season:

1 Plymouth Argyle 23 10 0 1 (21 8) 5 5 2 (21 17) +17 50
2 Ipswich Town 23 7 4 1 (22 9) 7 2 2 (22 13) +22 48

Despite going up a division, we are also Pd 23; PTS +4; GD -7; GF +3 on where we were at this stage last year; more points and goals scored, but have conceded 10 more goals. (So just 2 if you don't include Leeds!)

And finally, for those who like to track it, yes, we're still almost on target...projected totals are now 104 Points, 94 Goals.

COYB and a Merry Christmas to my fellow TWTD'ers

End of year / transfer window opening stat for you all...

We've played 12 League games since the beginning of November. Our results have been W5, D5, L2

We played 11 League games between the beginning of November and the end of January last season (longer period and not as many League games due to a number of Cup games). Results were W4, D5, L2

With the intensity of our style of play putting big demands on our regular starters, understandable that there'll be the odd game where we can't quite grind out the win at this time of year with the pile up of fixtures.

I think we'll see 4 new players in again this window (and 2/3 out depending on the ages of the signings) who will help us kick on like we did last season. Just to put into perspective how good a start we have had, even if we were to just continue our current 12 match form through to the end of the season, that would put us on 89 Points.

And finally, for those who are tracking it, projected totals are now 99 Points, 88 Goals.
