Slow pace of our play 08:23 - Feb 12 with 627 viewsBlueMoon

So much of our ‘impressive’ possession is as a result of us being so slow and predictable in our play. Always looking for the simple pass but often way too predictable, unlikely to break down opposition and everything is so slow we get closed down as soon as the ball reaches the recipient. It’s somewhat ironic that this all goes out of the window in injury time, when it could be useful & panic sets in but that’s another topic.

We need to mix it up as we have been too predictable for a long time and we’ve been found out over the last 10 games or more. Same applies to Walton’s endless short goal kicks - predictable and they put us under pressure from the get-go.

2nd half we finally looked to have some tempo and craft. It was great but doesn’t last for long enough.

It’s unfortunate that our current, wonderful support seems to effect our players so badly. They seem
to go into their shells and resort back to this easy / slow pattern of play. Take a risk, inspire the crowd. The smaller league 1 teams come to a sell-out Portman Road and get inspired, why can’t our team do the same?

Indeed there was a lot of pondering. One thing also evident was Walton being so slow to distribute the ball until the crowd urged him on (to put it politely). I get the not taking risks, but there were times he could have taken a quick throw/ kick before Weds had chance to get back in position. He looked very nervous again.

Our best football came when we ran at them and played with pace in the second half. It also gave Weds the jitters and they started making mistakes at the back. Just a shame we didn’t start like that as it felt like a real missed opportunity.

If we're so unlikely to break down the opposition, why are we miles ahead of everyone in the league on things like shots on goal and xG? That doesn't stack up.

Xg doesn’t get you promoted though does it. Its point I’m not sure what he said is unfair - there’s a tendency on here to be black and white, either side of the fence.

Are we getting a lot of things right? Yes. Are other areas letting us down? Yes

Who has said xG wins you the league? What it does is show how many chances of decent quality a team creates, and given we're miles ahead of everyone on that metric I'm not convinced the idea we struggle to break teams down really stacks up. Our problem is not being clinical enough to take those chances and giving away too many goals from the comparatively few chances we concede.

But we have scored a high number of goals and made an enormous amount of chances. So this doesn’t really add up.
