Pets At Home claiming key worker status for their employees 09:38 - Mar 22 with 4467 viewsStokieBlue

Thoughts?

Seems rather cynical from the company - a way to stay open by ensuring their staffs children can attend school. There are strict limits on class sizes which are government by the teachers available. With many teachers isolating the spaces are needed by the emergency services.

Pet food can be bought in supermarkets, online or at a push can be made by people themselves.

There are only a certain number of places in schools for key worker children and even if these are granted they should be right at the bottom of the list of who gets a key worker place for their children.

"Pet food can be made by people themselves."

No it can't, not safely for more than a couple of weeks anyway - the nutrients, vits & mins that cats & dogs need are highly complex if they are to stay healthy - it's a specialist skil which 99% of pet owners just won't have.

Those who feed their dogs a BARF diet spend weeks/months studying what's needed beforehand, if they're responsible, and even then it's an ongoing learning process.

Of course they can claim this.

IF you live anywhere near one they have stuff on shelves. If you want to be cynical, petfood in this country is made from human grade ingredients.... you can eat it... though the point is it is essentail to keep the pet food industry working to keep food production working.

And pets are just about the only company many old folks have - they are vitally important now they are 'isolated'....conveniently forgetting that most always have been

They also have vets. Vets can legally treat people.... doctors cant treat animals.... so one of their vets might keep you alive when all the hospitals are overwhelmed in three weeks time.

Well said re the isolation.

People who live alone normally rely on friends & rellies for hugs & touch. If they have dogs or cats, they are now going to be the only way they get those - huge for emotional & psychological health, and I'm guessing will reduce the need for psychiatric intervention too.

It was a the last thing on my list and hence the last resort.

"not safely for more than a couple of weeks anyway"

This was basically what I was saying - as a last resort it would work for a couple of weeks.

Do you think keeping pet shops open is a vital service which should qualify for key worker status?

Re your last question - yes I do, for food & vet anyway.

You can't get petfood in supermarkets now, and many older people don't have internet access - in any case, online firms will soon be overwhelmed too, if they aren't already.

PAH is a major manufacturer & retailer of petfood, who are needed right now.

But at the expense of a nurse being able to go in? Or a doctor? The school places are extremely finite.

There has to be a pecking order - no objection to them being on the list but a fair way down the pecking order. Fully understand that pets are an essential part of many peoples lives of course.

Not all pet food can be bought in supermarkets.

It is very much an important industry if you value animal welfare. I know someone that produces horse feed and demand for their produce has rocketed up, clearly illustrating the importance of the pet industry.

"You can't get petfood in supermarkets now"

Really? I noticed plenty in Tescos and Sainsbury's in Crystal Palace yesterday. I wouldn't normally notice it as I don't have a pet, but it was noticeable in that it had bare shelves either side. I thought to myself, if this gets really bad that'll be the shelf where I'll be shopping for dinner!

I bet Bloots will downarrow this.

Depends where you are, CrystalPalaceBlue. I'm guessing more dogs & cats in Yorkshire than Crystal Palace!

I didn't say anything about who or which categories should come above or below who, I just said PAH staff should be on the list. Probably not all of them should, just those engaged in manufacturing & retailing petfood + vet staff. No need for toys, accessories etc.
