Socialist states 13:13 - Mar 18 with 1780 views | uefacup81 | Given the posts that have done the rounds on social media of late comparing current pictures of British supermarkets with the stock images of Venezuelan supermarkets used to highlight the dangers of socialism, part of me would be fascinated to know how 'true' socialist states are dealing with this sort of thing. I dare say, if it was still around, East German citizens would have been having a much easier time of it than we are at the moment.

That was my thought process as I was wandering around the city this lunchtime, with my trusty German stoffbeutel, trying to find a solitary tin of tomatoes: It reminded me of the stories of old East Germans always having a bag with them 'just in case'. Surely a system whereby the state controls the means of production and distribution would have much more control over the current situation as opposed to one where everything is dictated by the market?

We all know how the Chernobyl disaster went and what led to the causes. They'd certainly do more to lock it down but they'd also likely deny the issue for as long as possible. OP said East Germans would have had it easier. It was a dreadful place to live. Indeed, it was not socialist but communist. Thought the point was obvious.

True point. I think he meant directly in relation to dealing with the virus. I don't know anyone who'd particularly like to live in East Germany!
