'ey up TWTD,

Can anyone recommend some decent places to stay in Suffolk?

Taking a young lady to see our beautiful county for the first time (ITFC game included, naturally) and wondered if any of you had tips on the best places to stay.

Ideally, somewhere on the coast or near to the AONB would be great. A couple of decent places to eat/drink nearby wouldn't hurt either. Seen a few nice looking places in Aldeburgh but any other suggestions?

Not sure mother's box room in Lowestoft has the required ambience :)

And if the lady's really lucky, she'll catch crabs in Walberswick too

Thanks in advance x

crown and castle at orford.

And so as the loose-bowelled pigeon of time swoops low over the unsuspecting tourist of destiny, and the flatulent skunk of fate wanders into the air-conditioning system of eternity, I notice it's the end of the show

Aldeburgh is the obvious suggestion, Southwold too. Woodbridge will be a bit livelier in the evening than the other two but is a bit of a trek from the crabs.

Some excellent suggestions so far. Thanks all!

I'm sure we'll find a pleasant spot amongst all these. The football may be the only worrying factor... And if it all goes wrong otherwise, are pick-ups still available from Rendlesham?

How many days you planning for?

Could you not stay at a couple of different locations and see a contrast?

I know Lowestoft is stunning place and a fine example of the UK's wonderful coastline, but if you could tear yourself away, then a night in Lavenham would offer a bit of culture along with some romantic setting thrown in.

*Yes I understand the cries for Orford, but wondered if you had time to do both.

I've never been to Orford and have no idea where it is. I only really know the stadium and a few pubs in Ipswich and I think I've been to Southwold once, crazy considering I lived for over 30 years in Suffolk

Well I suppose if you lived in Barton Mills at the time why would you want to go anywhere else?

I can fully understand that.

All a bit up in the air at the minute, ma dood. As it's only a stone's throw I suppose we could stay for as long as is needed, depending on work of course. Was initially thinking just a weekend but could certainly go for more.

More to just get out of the smoke, do a bit of walking and see some Constable country :)

Went to Orford castle and Framligham castle on a school trip once.
Wasn't that the same for all schoolkids in east Suffolk?

I think at some point in every Lowestoft teen's life they will have nicked the 'Clothes must be worn past this point' sign!

There also used to be some fabulous abandoned pornography exhibits hidden in the fortifications, if I remember rightly. But think the internet has more or less done away with soggy copies of Razzle now.

I can't drive but she can. This is another consideration. Which is why I was thinking places mainly within taxi/train/walking distance. Don't mind a good hike!

It's no Red Lodge.

Do you know, I had to go to Red Lodge recently and was amazed at the place.

It's an actual place now with houses, roads, shops, dentists, doctors, people, life...

Very modern and shiny, if you like that sort of thing. It's like it grew overnight like a mini Milton Keynes.

I remember it as a dusty road which could be difficult to find on a bad day, with a rough old cafe full of dodgy types (and truckers) and a go-kart track a mile or two down the road.

It's the size of a small town now.
