Squad numbers.... 12:28 - Jan 20 with 3197 viewsitfcjoe

....reading an interesting article about them earlier - but would you set up a 442 and 352 using 1-11.

I'd go:
-------1-------
2---5---6---3
7---4---8---11
----9---10----

--------1--------
----5---6---4---
2----------------3
----7---8--11---
------9---10----

It seems now as though a '6' is seen as a central midfield role, but not for me Geoff. Without wingers the numbering system doesn't really work that well in a 352 - a midfield of 7,8 and 11 looks a bit flaky!

Number 6 is a central defender number, and I won't have anyone tell me otherwise. If you believe it's a centre mid's number, then get in the bin.

Agree with both your numbers, though number 7 as a central midfielder does look odd!

In the 352 I'd have 11 up front & 10 in the middle of the 3.

Let’s have this right, 1 is for keepers, 2 and 3 are for full/wing backs, 6 is a central defenders number, as is 5, 4 is for a central midfield player, 7 and 11 for wingers/wide players, and 9 is for a forward, notably a target man. That leaves 8 and 10 for midfield or forward, that’s enough flexibility for anyone

Yes buh, I'd probably go the same.

You know me, proper geek when it comes to squad numbers. This even filters over in to Football Manager where each number I have down as a set position. Crazy I know.

Agree with both of those.

For a 442 , the numbering system should be as follows:

1 - Goalkeeper.
2 - Right back.
3 - Left back.
4 - Deep central midfielder, potentially the late arrival in the box.
5 - Left sided centre back.
6 - Right sided centre back. Anyone who says this is central midfield can get in the sea.
7 - Right midfield / wing.
8 - Central midfield, potentially the more advanced of the two.
9 - Centre forward. Target man.
10 - Centre forward. Smaller and quicker and more skillful than number 9.
11 - Left midfield / wing.

As we now have squad numbers, they mean slightly less I suppose, but the 1-11 of the squad should be the first choice players belonging to the club in each position.

Loanees shouldn't have 1-11 - they are our guest and get what they're given.

I think 5 and 6 is the wrong way, I'd always see 6 as the left footer and going right to left like full backs and wingers would show that too.

Whether it's just from personal memory I don't know, but I've seen some fantastic central midfield number 7's, so I tend to think of that more as a central role rather than more as a winger.

The 5 and 6 doesn't bother me particularly which way round they are, as long as they are both central defence.

6 is absolutely not a central midfield role any more than it is a striker's number. That much is sure.

6 is a centre half for me
4 is a midfielder, writing this I keep thinking on John Fleck and Gerrard for England
7 and a number in the teens is the winger
9 and 11 strikers. Number 10 reserved only for an attacking midfielder

However I am a weirdo and like players who are like number 45 and that, I just think it looks cool

In the 3-5-2 it's much tougher but I'd probably have 7 and 11 as wing backs and 2 and 3 either side of 5, which would mean a midfield of 4, 6 and 8.

Spot on on both counts

I grew up with John Wark being our number 7, and of the era when Bryan Robson was primarily the England number 7... and then David Beckham followed on from that.

So that's why I've always related to number 7 being a central midfielder.

Don't recall what number Dyer was initially - I know he had no. 30 when back on loan.

6 can be a centre half or just about a centre MF number, but only just.
2 can be a centre half or a RB.
3 is LB ONLY, this is law.
4 is a MF number but can be a CB number or even an RB number at a pinch
5 is a CB number
7 can be CM thanks to Warky and to a much lesser extent, Bryan Robson (the most over-rated English player in history)
8 is a CM or just barely acceptable as a CF but that's it
9 is for one position only and we all know that
10 and 11 I am fairly flexible on although 10 MUST NOT be used by a defensive player

In the spirit of reconciliation and happiness at the end of the Banter Era (RIP) and as a result of promotion I have cleared out my ignore list. Look forwards to reading your posts!

1 - keeper
2 - right back (and right back only)
3 - left back (and left back only)
4 - centre mid
5 - centre back
6 - centre back
7 - winger
8 - centre mid
9 - striker
10 - striker/attacking mid
11 - winger
12 - right back/left back
13 - keeper (and keeper only)
14 - striker/winger
15 - centre back
16 - a well rounded number this, pretty much anywhere
17 - winger
18 - another well rounded number, pretty much anywhere
19 - striker (at a push, winger)
20 - another well rounded number, pretty much anywhere
21 - centre mid
22 - right back/left back
23 - another well rounded number, pretty much anywhere
24 - keeper (and keeper only)
25 - centre back
26 - another well rounded number, pretty much anywhere
27 - winger
28 - another well rounded number, pretty much anywhere
29 - striker/winger
30 - another well rounded number, pretty much anywhere

I live by those rules on FM normally (yes, sad, geek etc etc etc).

I always have 4 and 5 as central defence, and 6 and 8 as centre mid in a 442.

I think that harks back to the original champ manager in c.92 though.

That's rubbish.

It's all subjective really.

Remember Paul Pogba is a 6 by choice. Is he a CB?

Obviously some players have preferred numbers (Chambers with 4 here), but 6 is a centre back number, end of discussion.

I don't really think it matters either way.

Bryan Robson was a) rubbish and the most over-rated player of the 80s, b) always injured and c) always drunk.
