His views at the start about the need to broaden the support base haven't changed much - he had a piece in the Guardian this weekend on a similar theme.

Good operator.

Would also add that theres probably a difference in the audience compared to today. They were actually listening to him, rather than groaning or shouting out to interrupt... and trying to get their moment on tv.

It's pretty obvious and has been for many years. Appeal to the wider electorate and get 50% of your policies through or appeal only to your core support, spend your life in opposition and get sweet FA of your policies through.

As a former Labour man, Lowhouse has been jumped on and called a Tory for pointing out what most sane people now seem to have realised.

Agree on both points.

There is a distinct lack of respect in the current audiences. It's wrong and deflects the gaze from any serious point in the answer.

So many 'plants' in the audience you'd need MI5 to vet them first!

Assumption is to make an ass out of you and me. Those who assume they know you, when they don't are just guessing. Those who assume and insist they know are daft and in denial. Those who assume, insist, and deny the truth are plain stupid. Those who assume, insist, deny the truth and tell YOU they know you (when they don't) have an IQ in the range of 35-49.

I must admit since the wipeout on Dec 12th I realise my Wolfie Smith brand of politics which JC was the living embodiment of doesn't play well in the real world and hasn't got a cat in hell's chance of getting elected.

Must say that I agree. The UK, culturally and institutionally, is just anti-socialist, in any form (even mild social-democratic policies). Look what happened to Wilson.

We're a nation defined by mercantilism and individualism, something which the Thatcher era helped to strongly embed.

Oh well.

I thought much the same about the lack of respect during the latest election. Audience members shouting to MPs about how they need to show respect in parliament. Feels a society problem, not just a political one. Then the politician doesn’t raise their voice, answers politely and gets accused of giving a ‘politicians answer’. Can’t win, don’t know why anybody would do it these days.
