Now the dust has settled, was that our first 5-3 defeat since Spurs in 1980? Saw we had one or two in the sixties as well, but nothing more recent that I could see. A few in our favour, Barnsley, Bolton play-off, obviously.
Quite possibly I seem to remember Eric Gates getting himself needlessly sent off in that one.
As end of year roller coasters go, Town will have to go some to emulate 1963.... Fulham 10 Ipswich 1 on Boxing Day followed by Ipswich 4 Fulham 2 two days later. I think Town won and lost games 6-3 later that season too....losing to Spurss 6-3 in the league and beating someone in the cup.

I remembered that Gates was sent off as well. Can remember him pointing at his bleeding shins as the referee sent him off.
Also remember losing 5-3 at home to Man U in 1962-Denis Law got four of their goals.
Wasn't it 2-7 when Law scored the four goals? I can vaguely remember one being some sort of overhead kick north stand end or was that a different game.

I think he may have got 4 goals in both of them-he certainly did in the 5-3 because I just checked that in The Men Who Made The Town although it does not say who got their goals in the 7-2.
We were on holiday at my grandparents in Worcestershire at the time of the 7-2 so I did not see that game.

Thanks for the info, I hadn't realized Town had two heavy defeats by Utd so close to each other. I always thought i was at a night game against them and Denis the menace netted four and they went onto win 7-2 the year after we were champions. Maybe I've muddled the games.

The 7-2 was on Tuesday 3rd September 1963 early in the relegation season in which we conceded 121 goals in 42 games.

Cheers for that trip down memory lane. I remember I was at a night game and now I'm certain that's when Law scored some sort of overhead kick north stand end where I was standing as a not quite 9 year old but cannot place who I was with!

The 2-7 Man U game had some unusual scorers
David Sadler 4', Denis Law 34', 62' (pen), 84', Maurice Setters 40', Ian Moir 59', Phil Chisnall 67'

A bad day forDenis Law he only got 3
Well that's me corrected...always thought that was the game when Law netted 4. Maybe, as PJH mentioned that Law scored 4 in Towns 5-3 loss the previous season I was at that game too! David Sadler was our table host for the xmas game at Old Trafford 2000 and I'm sure he talked about scoring against us. That was probably the goal.
