Should SNP get their way and go independent...... 18:49 - Dec 13 with 4393 viewsblueconscience

.. How many years would it take for the country to become a new member of the EU? and once that happens will she be happy to fund the installation of a hard border, border controls etc etc?

Not trying to be argumentative or anything, am just a little curious.

Why a hard border? There'll be unfettered trade with the EU so what's the problem ... oh.

And the costs are shared. Read about how the Czech Republic and Slovakia divorced each other for a good rule of thumb.

The Scottish gov financial something (I forget what is called) said it would probably take 10 years and involved a lot of austerity to achieve the EU joining rules. I remember Andrew Neil pinning Sturgeon down on that although she disagreed with the level of austerity, but dort of agreed the 10 year timeframe
Scotland has one of the largest debts of any country in Europe. Plus there are a lot of other questions for example if Scotland keep the £ will the EU allow that given it will be controlled by a Country that isnt part of the EU.

If Scotland were to leave the Union, I think it is a fair assumption that the scotish pound (or what it will become) will be an independent currency too.

Where do you get the figure of Scotland's debt from? There is no treasury for Scotland (yet) or an agreement on a currency in which it can be stated. I think you are making assumptions based on paper talk rather than hard fact there. And it will need someone to unravel the Bartnett Formula first before any agreement on what terms Scotland would exit the United Kingdom, whether that be with funds or in debt. I reckon twenty five years...

I think Boris and Co might well consider allowing the 2nd indy ref you know. I mean, it further makes it difficult for anyone to unseat the Conservatives going forward. Quite surprised by the huff and puff from a few about this considering that.

Presumably there would be a punitive divorce bill. That’s how it works when you want to leave right!?

I’d like them to call it the Scottish Dragoon. It would anchor it with a historical, classical tone and is a corker of a word for the accent.

I can confirm the Currency would be named the Sturgeon as she is elevated to the status of Monarch with Ian Blackford filling her role as great and glorious leader.

I think it all depends on what type of Brexit the UK ends up with. The harder, the more likely the Scots are to want to remain in the EU and so wish to leave the UK.

I do think the Brexit issues the UK has faced will similarly be issues for the Scots though. Suspect a few will look at those and shy away from a similar unknown for them.

But the strong SNP showing does make a strong case for the Scots to have a say, BJ will struggle to refuse imho

I’d say go one further and let Labour clusters become their own governed states. Let the rest of Tory Britain get on with their sh1t show whilst those who actually live in multi-cultural areas who know Brexit is an awful idea can get on with their socialist car crash economies.

And no, you can’t immigrate to our states if you voted Tory. You dug your grave.

Fantastic idea

I'll have to make a few sacrifices though...living in red Hammersmith, I'll have to start using the Tesco in Shepherd's Bush rather than the one Kensington, or my pork chops will spoil while I'm waiting to go through customs at the border

You are right about the Czechs and Slovaks,it goes to show that with good will on both sides what can be accomplished. I think I am right in saying though that both countries were not in the EU at the time so only had to agree between themselves the terms of their split. Scotland’s leaving the UK really should not be a problem. Their troubles will begin when and if they get back into the EU,
After all there is no GFA for them to fall back on,virtually all their trade will have to go through England whether to us or the EU with again the possibility of a hard border.
I would rather see them stay but it is their choice.

Tax spend on services is far higher per capita in Scotland (free uni/elderly care) for what is a weaker economy. Independence sounds good to those that want to hear it but it feels like a Brexit on steroids. Aka turkey's voting for Christmas.

I know that was then, but it could be again..

A flippant comment perhaps but I actually think you are spot on. Born and bred in East Anglia I have lived in Scotland for over twenty years and I know the Scottish psyche well. Their hearts rule their heads completely over independence and they completely ignore the potential long-term implications. I personally believe that no one minority sector of Great Britain should ever be empowered to break up the Union - if there is ever to be a referendum on Scottish independence then it should additionally involve England, Northern Ireland and Wales.

Put it this way, the Tory party don't exactly have form for offering the people the chance to re think when it turns out the original referendum was won on the back of lies.

They haven't really got an argument for a second referendum just because they dominate MPs at Westminster. All this means is that Scottish people like their overall package of policies and would like them to represent them at Westminster, that doesn't correlate to Scottish people wanting to leave the union, as evidenced in 2014. Having a referendum every 6 years is ridiculous.

Playing devil’s advocate, couldn’t you say that the Tories winning shows that they like the overall package of Tory policies, not that there’s a mandate for their Brexit deal?

It’s worth considering the SNP drew in 45% of the popular vote on Thursday; the unionist parties claimed 55%. That’s around the same split as the independence referendum in 2014, not that everyone who wants independence voted SNP and vice versa.

They have a majority in Westminster, Brexit is within that scope. The SNP only have a majority in Holyrood.

Yes it's a General Election. We can draw conclusions of why people voted for whom and say Brexit was the dominant factor, but nothing should be extrapolated to form exterior decisions, which seems to be the fashion nowadays. For example i read that 52% voted for remain parties and 48% for leave parties. This is a point of interest and nothing more, people are voting in a General Election.

Why should only Scotland get to vote? Why not England, Wales and NI? Would be an intriguing outcome.
