Clive James on Television - the very definition of must-watch prime-time viewing. He'd be lucky to get a 15 minute slot on Sky Arts or BBC4 nowadays...

Just one small problem; sell their houses to who, Ben? Fcking Aquaman?

His TV reviews in The Observer were wonderful.

And a decent lyricist and poet.

I grew up seeing him as a wryly amusing TV host and it took a while before I realised that there was so much more to him.

This was his last published poem I think:

Sad to hear but at least he had a decent innings.

Unreliable Memoirs is one of the best autobiographies ever, certainly one of the funniest, and a fantastic study of growing up.

Indeed.
Very well said, was about to post along these lines.

We have no village green, or a shop. It's very, very quiet. I can walk to the pub.

I think it should be on the syllabus it's that good.

Not sure if you're the same but it's one of those books that you can read 4 or 5 times and enjoy it more each time.

i saw him give a poetry reading a couple of times. On the second occasion (in about 1975) his performance was interrupted by a young John Cooper Clarke shouting 'Nixon is a crook'. Clive's reply? 'Sonny, some of us have known that for twenty years'.

My late father used to roll around laughing at Clive James. As I do. I still run through his “Postcards from......” The Tokyo and Berlin episodes are just masterpieces of dry sarcastic wit. They are available on YouTube. He has been ill for years I believe. Great loss indeed. RIP Clive.

'He didn't know a wah-wah

Great couple of lines.

And Little Sammy Speedball is good stuff too.

Driving Through Mythical America is the best song about the Kent State University shootings. Far better than Neil Young's Ohio.

And who can forget his one and only review of Poldark (the original 1970s series): 'Poldark is an anagram of old krap.'

God clearly doesn't want the Lib Dem manifesto getting any airtime.

Or maybe the BBC just bumped off some of its former employees to spite Jo Swinson.

My unreliable memory of his "Unreliable Memoirs" seems to focus in on him describing how he'd poo in class at school shuffle to turn them into balls allow them to slip out of his shorts then kick them across the room.
Please someone verify this for me!

I saw JCC playing the Quay in Sudbury last week. He didn't look in teh best of health, even for him. Turned out he'd got a very nasty leg cellulitis, sustained from stepping on a carrier bag full of broken glass.

He was VERY talkative afterwards when signing books and took quite the shine to Mrs Badger.

I'm one of the people who was blamed for getting Paul Cook sacked. PM for the full post.

My late mum used to love Clive James so I began reading his newspaper pieces & later read most of his books. I also remember watching him in the (for the time) anarchic TV show "Up Sunday" in 1972-73.
Rather ironic that James made a TV career out of poking fun at Japanese game shows and some of us are now "enjoying" shows that don't seem much better.
He came to Radlett some years ago do to a talk and was entertaining, while I did get him to sign a copy of his memoirs which he dedicated to my late mother.

That was one.

Not saying we've all got those stories but it was brutally honest and unflattering. he was the villain of his own autobiography which is quite an achievement.

I loved the story about the soap box cars too.

I would imagine he spoke of little apart from the 'Nixon is a crook' incident.

I dusted it down from the bookcase for another re-read when a poster was waxing lyrical about it on a book thread here last year.
Took it to read on holiday, had a good old chuckle on the beach.
