Can those of you who understand football, please explain to me why Skuse has to stand alongside Garbutt when he takes a free kick in the attacking third? It seems to me to be waste of a player who could either be in the opposition box being a nuisance , or on the edge of the box to pick up headed clearances. Everyone praises Skuse's ability to read a game, but I don't see what he can contribute just stood next to Garbutt.

It's endemic to the whole of football. Have never understood the need for a crowd of players around the ball when a FK is taken. If you want to change the angle, stand off a bit to make it worthwhile. Otherwise you're more useful in or around the box.

Good Lord! Whatever is it?

It's generally to make the defensive unit question which of the 2 is going to take it, a left footer or right footer as it'll determine if it's likely to swing in or out. Just helps to add a little uncertainty, although it's quite clear if you've done your homework that Garbutt will whip it.

Agree completely. Surely if the idea is to sow the seed of doubt in the opposition as to who is going to take the kick and where it is going, putting someone there who a) can take a freekick and b) actually makes some attempt with his body language etc to suggest that he might do so, are necessary parts of the ruse?

Or is he there to try and collect the second ball if it comes off the wall? Again, might want it to be someone with better acceleration than Skuse if so?

As you say opposition teams will have watched us, and they will have observed that , if he is playing, Garbutt taks the free kicks irrespective of which side of the pitch they are. Does Skuse take them if Garbutt is not playing?
