How will the party pay for its promises?

Cuts to defense are one possibility. The Sunday Times reports that defense chiefs have plans to slash the U.K.’s army to its smallest size in centuries, after the Tory manifesto ditched a pledge made two years ago to “maintain” its current state.

They are probably going to privatise the army. It'll make it cheaper AND more efficient....

I read it.

TBH I despair. My eldest two sons are serving. The moral at one of the units is poor, so poor the CO is trying to stop people signing-off.

The eldest is about to sign-off. He's got a job as a trainee land surveyor. Good for him I say.

I cannot believe what has happened over the past 20 years. The cost cutting has been brutal in the green army. The only place which has kept any kind of decent budget is SF.

The Royal Marines are getting slashed under the guise of 'lean commando force'.
We've less tanks than my 6 year old.

With Russia even more active, Estonia is pretty tense - my middle son was there recently, and the GRU are everywhere with there perfume bottles - Bulgaria the latest, see Bellingcat.com.

We need to be redefining and scaling-up. Review the cold war roles, redefine the battle field for the next 20-50-100 years, retrain, redeploy.

But invest, invest, invest before we become analogue and historic.

Happy to give the Tories the bird on their lack of support for the Armed Forces.

Assumption is to make an ass out of you and me. Those who assume they know you, when they don't are just guessing. Those who assume and insist they know are daft and in denial. Those who assume, insist, and deny the truth are plain stupid. Those who assume, insist, deny the truth and tell YOU they know you (when they don't) have an IQ in the range of 35-49.

It seems like it is just another public service and being treated like schools, hospitals and transport services.

Cut, cut, cut, when it needs investment.

I think this is where there should be a rational debate about things like Trident and aircraft carriers - are they the most sensible use of a limited defence budget? Instead it's all about ideological posturing.

One other thing is that, with these continued cuts to the backbone of the UK military, the UK doesn't have the external power projection that many politicians still think it has. I know we disagree on Brexit but much of the Tory party's view of Britiain's stature in the world is at odds with the reality of their policies over the last decade.

Working in the forces should be the coolest job out there but that's what happens when you let Capita do your recruitment instead of me.
It's moronic in the extreme to re-up on Trident while our conventional forces are defenestrated in this way. I don't think we need a huge standing army or air power particularly but it certainly doesnt need to be cut back any further.

the Capita thing is such a train wreck.

I went for an interview at my local Army recruitment office just so I could see behind the scenes.
It was shocking. The managers looked like they were on the way home from last night. They asked me about the Capita contract and had no clue as to the economics and theory of what they are doing.

My old Cpl is at Netheravon as a call handler. They pay £20k for people to blast through calls. No face to face contact. Nothing.

I do think we need a bigger armed forces. We can barely cover our existing requirements and couldn't deploy anything of note if required.

You could even in that sort of rational debate, start thinking about the rationale of treating Europe as an entity that is under threat, rather than a single country within Europe.

And sort of band together, within Europe to join forces, a bit like we do with some of the manufacturing of some military equipment.

I am not sure what sort of thing that would be or what you would call it.

European Army, maybe?

Technology can only do so much. There comes a point where you actually need people on the ground to do stuff (e.g. making your presence felt in a peacekeeping situation). It's a bit of a waste to use highly trained and specialist units (Marines, Paras, SAS) for that, plus there aren't enough of them and they're then not available for emergencies.

Good Lord! Whatever is it?

Fair play. Although, I don't think the army is the biggest priority, that's a fair and balanced view.

I'd definitely use some of the Trident money to fund more recruitment instead, mind.

Privatise the armed forces.

There must be loads of 'spare' land that could raise a fair bit of money for it's new owners.*

Then simply hire in only when needed, on zero hours contracts from G42 etc. Which would then allow Johnson to claim that the government were employing 10,000 more troops when any were hired to sort of some brown faced foreign johnnies, who were misbehaving.

The UK could then concentrate on what it is good at, making arms, and selling them to Mustapha P or Sheik en Vaq whichever offered the most money.

No costly pensions or disability payments. No training costs, equipment etc and the biggest bonus of all it would put Jim Davidson out of work

You have my sympathy.

"We need to be redefining and scaling-up. Review the cold war roles, redefine the battle field for the next 20-50-100 years, retrain, redeploy."

FWIW I think that part applies across the board for our society and economy to face the current and coming challenges of the modern world. Also ensuring we're "battle ready" across the country, not just in London.
