party leader bigotry? 13:46 - Nov 20 with 628 viewssparks

Whilst it is reasonable to continue to criticise one leader on anti semitism issues, it seems right to note and discuss his opponent's extraordinary history of overtly discriminatory comments.

Boris is a man who referred, in print, to gay friends of peter mandelson as 'tank topped bumboys'. Who has made the assertion that women are inherently fickle. And who talks of muslim women in burkgas as looking like pillar boxes.

Most people are aware of that last one. But how about the other two?

The presence of those seeking the truth is infinitely to be preferred to the presence of those who think they've found it. (Sir Terry Pratchett)

I think that's a huge can of worms right there. It's not just Johnson, for example 50% of the Tory members have actually admitted to being prejudiced against Muslims which is a shocking statistic if we're going down the road of existential threats and increasing racism. I'm sure there are similarly worrying views about women, gays and other minorities.

But ... a lot of this at best lazy stereotyping and at worst demonisation comes from ignorance that's made worse by a lack of appropriate discussion in politics and the media.

Agreeing and imposing standards amongst politicians, leaders of other representative organisations and in the mainstream media (who are the groups who still shape and lead these discussions) seems to be the right place to start. And also to ensure that the standards don't slip into mudslinging and accusations.

Surprised at the absence of coment on this thread - maybe people just aren't surprised at him or the reprehensibility of the Con party at the moment. And/or don't expect better from them, but do from Labour?
