Wolves - UEFA Cup/Premiership 08:44 - Sep 20 with 2730 viewsartsbossbeard

I really enjoyed watching them play last year but the UEFA Cup is an absolute nightmare for some clubs and I make Wolves one of these.

Massive ones like Man Utd can cope but most other clubs just don’t have the resources. The money you get for doing well in it doesn’t allow you to spend big and have the resources to be able to maintain league form and challenge in it. It’s a sh1t competition now.

The fans who go to the away game will be loving the trips, naturally

Just as it was for us. I seem to recall us playing away in Russia on a Thursday night and then playing Man Utd away at Old Trafford at 3pm on the Saturday, something like that! Whatever it was exactly didn't help our chances much of staying up that second season!

I'd had a couple of the local brews in Liberec but didn't we go to extra time after Marshall dropped the ball in his own net?*

We'd have had a game the weekend to follow, of course.

*yes, I could google it.

It's nothing like the premier competition it once was but wolves are hardly paupers. The extra income they get over braga could buy them an extra team.

Whilst I agree with the general point about the tournament, I don't think it's accurate to say Wolves are one of the clubs that doesn't have the resources.

Just look at the money they have been throwing around last 2 seasons. 33m on one player - I suspect most teams in the Europa League don't do that.

Fair point; I knew they were well bankrolled, but hadn't realised they'd had such a busy summer. A massive ask getting that lot to gel.

Some of the undisclosed are upwards of 20m as well, like the keeper Patricio.

I haven't been paying any attention to the PL, but I've just had a look and it's no surprise to see them near the bottom. I've no idea what they have been playing like, and it may well all come together for them of course. But it's such a huge ask - they've had far more disruption that we did and somehow have to get that lot firing in the league and the extra cup games.

If they go down it'll be interesting; they can't afford to carry that lot so they'll need a complete clear out with all the destabilisation that brings. If they can't sell people on and they're carrying high wages they'll start hitting against FFP buffers pretty quickly.

As much as we all enjoyed getting Europa League in 2001, that was probably he main factor as to why we got relegated the following season.

Actually that's got me thinking. Would've you rather:

1. Have that one season in Euro but then get relegated.
2. Finish mid tableish in 2001 and have another 4-5 seasons in the Prem?

"Second Season Syndrome" - I'm sure I came up with that before I heard it on MoTD - promoted teams tend to struggle in their 2nd season, especially if they're in the UEFA cup, or whatever it's called.

Doesn't bother me too much, but like you I would be happy to see them relegated.

It is clear to see they have spend money on capable players, but many of those deals seem over priced to me, fees you'd expect to see spent on proven player. It really does seem a bit Football Manager to me.

That's why I had a few quid on them to be relegated at 50/1.

I can see why 50/1 would be an appealing book, similarly, I am not surprised to see them in the position they are currently.

I'd rather have a speculative bet at 50/1 than a bet on the usual suspects at 4/7 on or whatever the ante-post prices were for the three teams that got promoted.

Looking at that list is the reason I hate Wolves. A fine bunch of up and coming home nations players!!!

Teams like Wolves spend the majority of their money abroad and very little goes through the league set up.

We played away to Man U on the Saturday we played away in Moscow on the following Thursday.

Your memory is better than mine, we played Utd on the Saturday 22nd September but we still had only just played the first leg of our UEFA tie at home on the Thursday (and then it was the return fixture in Russia the following Thursday just as you said). If I recall Fergie wouldn't move the game from the Saturday to Sunday at our request. That wouldn't happen now, if you played Thursday night in Europe (home or away) you wouldn't have to play a big league game like Manchester Utd away at 3pm on the Saturday, they'd move it to Sunday.

Relevant fixture dates, see here:

I was staggered to read SBs list of who they’ve signed and the money spent. I assume they’re all good players, but will they gel and if so when? Will the Carlos Kickaball brigade be up for it on a Tues night in Feb away from home? It’ll be interesting to see.
