Carpal tunnel or Arthritus 01:03 - Sep 19 with 4137 viewswkj

Being a professional keyboard jockey, carpal tunnel seems to be an inevitability I will face, if not facing it already, so was just sounding out anyone that may have or had it and who has had surgery of other treatment.

My symptoms are mostly in the area on the back of the hand between the little finger and his neighbour. Although i am wandering if I might be looking at the Arthritis problem too as I get shooting pain in my wrist occasionally when bracing them in an L shape, such as getting up out of a char or what not.

Just curious what treatments are like and how well the pain can be managed as I get further along in the game of life. I tend to avoid a lot of online articles or symptom checkers as I usually manage to some how end up with an incurable life threatening condition.

Got a GP visit booked for next week, but the old cogs be a churnin' and will be until then.

Check the obvious, posture, hand to keyboard angles etc.

I get horrible pain in my hand/wrist when I get a bit lazy typing.

A good excercise for Carpal Tunnel Syndrome is to hold the relevant arm out in fron to you with the hand flat, palm facing down. Tilt your hand down so the fingers are pointing at the ground. With your other hand, pull the fingers towards you without bending the CTS arm, in other words putting tension on the wrist. Supposedly relieves pressure on the canal the nerve goes through (which is what causes CTS).

I've found that helps.

Don't like the sound of the medical treatment, which involves cutting the nerve. But if someone is in chronic pain, that might be necessary.

Impeded my career (wanted to work with horses) from 16 onwards, couldn't lift water buckets etc repeatedly. Pain was aways between thumb & forefinger, both hands, down into wrist.

Wasn't till I was 50 & following successful surgery on my neck that I got it sorted. The neuro-surgeon, in a follow-up appointment, half jokingly asked ifthere was anything else he could do, and I (also half-jokingly) said "well, I've got this problem that I think's carpal tunnel" & he replied "yep, I can do that for you" - and he did, cut both nerves, hugely successful, no pain or side effects since, never looked back, wished I'd had it done 30 years earlier.

Thank you NHS!

Carpal tunnel symptoms affect your thumb, first and middle finger as well as your elbow or upper arm. It's the nerve that is connected to those three that is compressed. I regularly used to lose sensation or get pins and needles in my fingers.

Before I had the op there were some days I couldn't work and was often woken up in the night with shooting pains up my arm.

I did a fair bit of health and safety training 16 years ago when my employers took it seriously as nearly everyone was using computers and RSI (Repetitive Strain Injury) was a concern. Guthrum’s is a good exercise and as for surgery, the success rate used to be mixed. Hopefully they’ve learned a lot more now.

In computer/mouse work, posture is everything. Straight back, right angle forearms/thighs and trying not to bend wrists along with proper distance from kit not looking up at the screens. Regular breaks etc. Easier said than done of course, in the real world. One thing I did find useful was learning to use a mouse left handed and the keyboard where just one hand was needed to give the right side a break.

See what the doc says is the thing to do and try and get a referral to a specialist if necessary.

Some people at my former work used those and said they helped. Despite understanding what posture should be, mine was dreadful. When you are busy and concentrating such things go out of the window. But when pain strikes one has to try and sort it!

One thing I did do always was avoid resting wrists on the desk (keeping hands in line with forearm like a pianist) and to help that I always had the keyboard flat. That actually was a recommendation years ago, but I don’t know if it is now. It worked for me.

Carpal tunnel symptoms tend to be pins and needles, rather than pain, at the base of the thumb and first finger, it can be out right by a simple op.

Doesn't sound as though the neck surgery was all that successful really - if you say you've never looked back since?

I find a back stool like this very helpful, keeps you in the correct position & is v. comfortable for lengthy periods. Your bum sits on the higher part with your knees either side on the lower part. Other makes are available! (but they do tend to be pricey, just google.)

Symptoms of carpal tunnel syndrome/RSI do vary from person to person, and incorporate any or all of pain, numbness and pins & needles.

Love the idea of this rocking chair - but no price tag on it, surprise surprise!

Will probably be shot down in flames here, but I went down the supplement route back in March. Glucosamine, turmeric & vitamin b complex. Has eased it considerably even though lots of hedge cutting & pruning this year. Accept many will think it’s Mumbo Jumbo though. Alternatively, there are wrist casts available that can ease the symptoms as Mrs Pinewood will testify.

We have no village green, or a shop. It's very, very quiet. I can walk to the pub.

I am indeed kind Sir. Plenty to do for my weird & wonderful clientele. It was one of these that put me onto the supplementary remedies for my knackered wrist. I trust you are fine and dandy dear boy?

Standing is perhaps a good idea for you. I always had my chair in a high position so my fingers were not operating at a higher level than my wrist, and always had to raise the height of the chair when sitting at someone else's desk. Have never had any carpal tunnel or arthritic symptoms but maybe that's just luck!

I can help you, wot you need to do is saw the legs half way up on your desk buy a deck chair adjust the deck chair to it's highest point by doing this you will be able to reach the keyboard with your trotters, thus being able to type with the digits of the foot.

the wife has had carpal tunnel done on both hands this year. she having her trapezium removed on one hand at the end of the month. two knee replacements all due to arthritis.
it seems the trouble is if it is arthritis and you have treatment to help in one spot, it then looks for other joints to attack.

It really isn't too encouraging, but very true. My mum has rheumatoid and it just goes all over the place from one day to the next.
