Due to renew my anti virus.

Any IT types recommend one over the other?

Avast.

Or AVG.

Not paid for antivirus for years.

No viruses. Depends on how much porn you browse though.

There is a huge debate to be made about neither of them. I am contracted to use McAffee over Norton, and once I set it up not to give me notifications every other minute, slightly prefer it over Norton.

A case can be made the Windows Security Centre works just as well, and a lot of people will tell you AVG, although my personal favourite commercial AV software is BitDefender Plus.

See, this is the kind of helpful posting that goes unnoticed around these parts in favour of spreading the smear that we are utter b'stards.

Same as the first reply - unless you're browsing sites that might cause issues, you probably don't need a paid security package. I ditched McAfee about 8 years ago having had endless issues with it and it ultimately failing to deal with a trojan that got onto my system. Haven't paid for a package since.

I'm currently using Avira Free Antivirus but I wouldn't particularly recommend it as it's pretty intrusive (frequently popping up with adverts for the paid product and sometimes failing to open properly). I've used AVG Free before although it used to throw up a few false positives. I've always heard good things about Avast, which is probably what I'll move onto once I've got tired of Avira's nonsense.

Norton, i've found in the past just to bring my pc into an unworkable state.
So have gone with McAfee, it's alright, not the best but it doesn't hammer your pc. This was a few years ago mind.

The bigger ISPs often offer an AV package that is McAffee with a logo popper over the top of it. I too have had massive resource draw from Norton, which bumps it down a bit. Although a full-scan of any AV suite will kick the CPU usage up, Norton is the only one to ever BSOD my system when doing a full scan.

Thanks for all the responses.

I might just continue with McAffee.

I think I'm one of those novices that feels the need to have a paid for package.

Just try Avast for a month and see. You won't go back to paid services, trust me.

Neither of those bloatware.

If your using Windows 10 just use the firewall and antivirus already installed which I do and not 1 virus for as long as I can remember

Same. So long as you take reasonable steps to keep yourself safe (avoid dodgy sites and software), the built in windows 10 stuff is perfectly adequate these days.

Its actually more than adequate these days and offers real time protection.

Always wondered how some AV have free versions and then a paid for version. Obviously the free one will keep you just about safe and no more.

AV written by Microsoft for a Microsoft product is good enough for me.

All men and women are created, by the, you know the, you know the thing.

Tried AVG and McAffee at various times and found that they slowed my laptop down over a period of time. This was when i was running with WindowsXP. Tried Malwarebytes and CCleaner which was much better. Had to ditch XP in the end so, as i,m a complete Ludite re computers, my brother in law loaded Linux for me. Seems ok, but still slow at times but that is probably at my end, Sh1te router, Talk Talk and running through an ethernet cable. Funny thing is though the most lock up issues are when on TWTD.

Are you running Linux directly installed on the laptop, or is it a virtual machine (Linux running on a Windows host)

If you are unsure, does the boot screen show (I will assume Ubuntu) when you boot up

Running Linux directly. As for your other question, can,t say i,ve noticed the Ubuntu thing. As i said, i,m a complete computer duffer and only use it on a few sites, including TWTD, and a bit of browsing. Hell, i haven,t even got a printer.

Agree. Would be a better idea to pay for malware protection,

I can confirm that a laptops longevity is determined by the amount of porn you watch. I tend to buy a new one very month or so.
