First of all, talk about a clickbait headline.

The financial side being corrupt is hardly news.

Truly impaired.

The truth is, a London address makes all the murkiness seem completely above board. There's so much money laundering and dodgy dealing that happens here because we're now basically reliant on it.

And we're told that what we really do need more of is further deregulation and that it's just not polite to ask multi-nationals about their tax arrangements.

Of course, day to day, we're one of the least corrupt places on earth. Imagine trying to bribe a UK policeman! That is, of course, if you're just the man on the street and not, say, Google.

I have said this for some time. It is just that here it's very high level and for big stakes. Too much reading Private Eye I guess.

Low level stuff is pretty rare still I think. I.e.cops saying they will not give you a speeding ticket if you give them £50, which happened to someone I know in an EU country a few years ago.

Agree with points above about low-level corruption being quite rare, but the high level stuff being problematic. In some cases it's the government deliberately looking the other way - Companies House doing very little to enforce their own rules, and LLPs being widely used as a vehicle for criminal activity (Private Eye have done excellent work on highlighting this)

Also, IMO certain forms of corruption have effectively been made legal in the UK - political donations being an obvious example. Businesspeople can give large sums of money to parties to ensure legislation is in their favour and apparently that's completely fine.

Not to mention vested interests - Cameron pushing through the "dash to gas" at the expense of local communities and the environment, when he & half his cabinet had shares in the oil & gas industries & the financial institutions (edited) that bankrolled those.

End to end it is, from the huge sums invested by individuals and no questions asked by the banks or if tax has been paid down to people pretending they aren't fit for work and they are and claiming tax payers money, end to end corruption.

Although most African countries are far more corrupt

It's not something we like to talk about, is it? I mean, as soon as you do, all sorts of really nasty things get uncovered. Fortunately, it all gets shouted down by defenders of the establishment who scream "conspiracy theorist" or "show me the evidence!" and the problem disappears for a while but the practices go on, as they have done for centuries.

"The City effectively now stands as money launderer of the world, described now as the capital of the global crime scene. It is the heart and engine of the offshore haven, with Jersey, Guernsey and the Isle of Man its european collection centres, the caribbean and others hoovering up billions of American dollars from all over the globe. Whilst there are good and legal reasons for offshore accounts, it has a dark and shadowy client list; terrorists, drug barons, arms dealers, despots, dictators, shady politicians, corporations and companies, millionaires and billionaires — most with something to hide."

Given he provides no evidence, I think we can safely dismiss it.
