....ball hits front pad but would have missed wicket, however the ball deflects on to back pad and would have continued on to hit wicket at this point. Out or not?
"They break our legs and tell us to be grateful when they offer us crutches."
Thanks....did it hit his front pad at all yesterday?
Looked like it was his back leg to me.
The point of it being the back leg, is that it has already bounced, turned so there is much less doubt about where the ball is traveling next. If it hits the back leg it is much closer to the stumps so often removes much of the doubt about where it was going.
That said, my eyes are getting worse with age so don't take my word for it.
EDIT: even if it had hit the front pad, it hardly deflects and was still hitting middle stump. It was plumb LBW but the umpire got it wrong (thankfully).
It may explain why the umpire gave not out, believing it to have hit the front pad.
It was plumb LBW, however. The umpire made a mistake and we benefitted from it, just as we benefitted from Paine's mistakes to review ones that were never even close and Lyon's mistake not collecting a throw to run out Leach.
Interesting that Ben Stokes has said DRS got it absolutely wrong and that it hit his front pad and didn’t spin. The more I look at it the more I feel certain it flicked his front rather than back leg but I’m still not sure that would have changed the outcome

I said yesterday the ball tracking didn't look right to me. It didn't look like it turned and straightened all that much and my instinct was it was maybe clipping leg rather than hitting middle and leg. I think it's flicked his front pad for sure and that's changed the trajectory of the ball and confused DRS. I'm sure I've seen similar before.
