Good signing. Saw Colchester a few times last season and he’ll certainly take his chance at getting further forward from full back. Clever as he can play either side at full back and even wing back.

I just wonder if 5 at the back is something Lambert would consider... certainly got the tools to go ahead and play 5 at the back with two specialist wing backs, whilst getting Judge in the team in his number 10 role and getting 2 strikers on the pitch, in the future.

Something like:
Holy
KVY - Woolf - Chambers - Nsiala? - Garbutt
Skuse - Downes
Judge
Norwood - Jackson

Certainly an option the example above, another way of playing.

You've got zero cover though playing that formation in the wingback position.

Sears did well.

Geraint Williams.

George Burley, as manager.

All worked out OK.

Why have you moved one of our attacking successes, someone who has scored two goals thus far, into a defensive position?

Edwards played LWB for Peterborough. Would be nice to see him actually play him LW one game, I have a feeling he’d take it up a gear, but Lambert doesn’t seem to want to try that out.

Wing back, if played correctly, shouldn’t really be that defensive as it looks on paper.

Sheffield United just got promoted with it, and I believe their LWB scored 5 or so goals. If the system is used correctly, then tactically, your wing backs really can push on, just requires discipline from the 2 in centre midfield.

It’s an option, I don’t think we’d ever see it but I think it’s something that could work as Garbutt is a specialist wing back, and KVY has played both sides for Colchester in a wing back system.

Whats wrong with the current system which generated 18 shots against the favourites to win the division?

Sure, we didn't win but that doesn't mean we wouldn't on another day when we were more clinical.

Don’t think we will ever see a back 5 from lambo in this league. He’s always pretty much gone with a back 4

And can you imagine the cries if we lined up with a back 5 of...

I don’t disagree. I certainly wouldn’t change the line up at all that is working. There might be a time in the season where we need a plan B else we become too predictable.

Having more than one system will only work in our favour.

Hold your horses, he's not signed yet. That aside, we have flirted with a wing back system on many occasions over the years, and each time it has failed us miserably. You'd have to go back to the promotion side of 2000 for the last time we made it work.

This is the formation I’ve been crying out for all through pre-season and the past couple of weeks.

Those asking where the cover in wide areas come from need to study Louis Van Gaal’s teams of the 90s and early 2000s. When the full backs get forward, the CDMs automatically move into full back positions to cover. Therefore if Garbutt pushed forward, Skuse would step across and full in as a temporary left back.

It works well and promotes attractive football. We have the right personnel for it too.

Also encourages more numbers to get forward having the protection of 3 CB's and a defensive minded Skuse as cover. I personally feel it would work for a few reasons:

- Judge is clever enough to get into pockets and receive the ball on the half turn
- Downes/Skuse compliment each other well. Downes' energy would certainly make the system work. Skuse a defensive minded midfielder who positions himself effectively
- Two strikers on the pitch making us more of an attacking threat, but also giving us a better chance to press higher up the pitch
- Two specialist wing backs who know how to play in this type of system
- Three CB's on the pitch to deal with defensive concerns

Got to say 3 at the back with 2 wing backs when you’ve got someone as slow as Chambers is possibly a good way to play. Idon’t see many teams in this division running in behind us and Garbutts delivery from 30 yards out could be great for Norwood.

How many sides do this these days?

It relies on wing backs who can genuinely get up and down, and who can play as virtual midfielders. It relies on at least one and ideally two centre backs being genuine ball players.

Which of those do we have?
