"I hope everyone will judge the manager on the cards he has been dealt by me 11:21 - Aug 7 with 5589 viewsSamWhiteUK

and not just on our expectations." - Marcus Evans

This almost sounds like "don't judge him just on results but bear in mind the money situation".

I don't know, not really sure how to take this statement. Does PL have more of ME's support than Hurst did?

It's please stop calling me a **** and Lambert has loads of resources, but he can't have everything he wants because I've made so many balls ups since getting rid of Mick and letting Hurst go mental, that the arse has fallen out of a few too many things.

I expect so, given that Lambert - whilst not doing the goods on the pitch - isn't a hopeless incompetent that has ruined the club inside 4 months.

I think both ME and PL are keen to stress it's about building for the future in order to take some pressure off and so we don't have a meltdown if we get done 1-0 away at Rochdale this season. Privately both will be saying promotion is the aim and he says as much here too, he just doesn't expect us to walk the league.

I don't think any Manager can claim not to have had his support and pretty much full clarity on finances while they have been here

In the spirit of reconciliation and happiness at the end of the Banter Era (RIP) and as a result of promotion I have cleared out my ignore list. Look forwards to reading your posts!

He knew what the situation was when he came in.

He has signed players in Judge and Norwood that the rest of the league would kill for.

Yes, we could do with a couple more players in, but....

We have one of the highest wage budgets in the league.

We have on of the best squads in the league.

I would like Evans to fund a couple of signings, but more than anything, I want PL to bloody get on with his job!!

Given that we’ve taken in millions of pounds worth of unexpected revenue from sell-ons this summer, promotion is surely a necessity given that they’ve barely filled a hole in the budget?

That’s the annoyance for me - roll the dice a little this season and make double sure that we get up.

What the previous poster was suggesting is that we've had a one off windfall this year that we can spend. That's not the case, that money will be additional revenue over the next few years and will help to balance the books. Signing any players, however the deals are structured, creates further shortfall that will have to be met through fees also coming in next summer and the summer after.

I'd say top 6 is reasonable. We definitely have one of the biggest 6 budgets but this juggernaut of losing could take a bit of time to turn. If we are genuinely going to back our younger players i'd accept another year at this level, if we're going to get in a bunch of League One specialists we should go up. A good judge of this will be if we stick with Woolfenden, let him make mistakes, and (hopefully) end up with a young centre back with 40 appearances this season and ready to push on next year with us or even elsewhere. Perhaps you could say similar about Downes, Lankester, Dozzell etc.

I'm not sure he was - it's undeniable whether it's in 20ps or all at once it is a boost to the coffers. One that needs to be made the most of. It's swallowed up and we continue to sink, then that really will be criminal after so many other poor decisions.

The wording of his post very much suggests he sees it as a one season windfall, he talks about it still not plugging the gap and leaving us potentially worse in future seasons. That point is negated if those fees are spread over the next 2-3 seasons.

And the money received from those sell ons probably meant we kept Judge and Dozzell this summer. Next summer, if we don't go up, it will mean we can hold out for good money if anyone comes in for our better players rather than having to take whatever we're offered.

There's a doom and gloom on here sometimes that isn't reflected in my matchday experience. Biggest away following of the weekend at Burton, 20,000+ this Saturday and Peterborough will sell out as well.

It really doesn't. It suggests that this summer we are up millions of £'s which we are. Same as any other club selling players and getting kick backs.

We are as susceptible to the benefits as we are the negatives of how these transfers are stacked, just like every other club. To pretend it's somehow different for us, or we can't structure deals this same way is just wrong.

Also it does Jake a great disservice I think.

You're clearly reading it differently to me. He's suggesting we still have a shortfall this season despite a windfall so we should gamble on spending it to go back up. That ignores the reality that if we get that money in smaller amounts over multiple years it plugs most of the shortfall for this year and the next year and possibly beyond too.

I'm not sure why you keep mentioning it being different for us. I've never said that. I've focused on how these deals might work for us if the income is spread out as ME suggests.

There is a hole in the budget that has been filled by this windfall, whether that is over one year or four. It is disingenuous of Evans to suggest that it is just everyday business for us to receive millions of pounds without it being either a) a significant boost to the coffers or b) a significant adjustment to the money he needs to put in to run the club.

Without this money Evans is effectively saying that we won't have a sufficient budget to run the team at the current level in League One (because he's not putting anymore in). As such, as fans, surely it would be better off spent having one real crack at the title whilst the going is good rather than Evans opening up to another death by a thousand cuts (but at League One level rather than Championship)?

Without the money I suspect Judge would be at QPR right now and that Dozzer might not be far behind on his way out too. With the money we've been able to hold on to those players (barring a silly offer) and will be able to do so next year too if don't go up.

He could gamble on spending some money, but then there's a shortfall to make up this season and in future seasons if he does so.

We only signed Judge in April on a free transfer - we could hardly have anticipated him being one of the sellable assets needed to plug the hole

I doubt we did. But if there's a deficit to make up then every player is a saleable asset, and a bid from QPR would have been harder to turn down had we not had the money from the Clarke and Mings sell ons.

Evans has only ever seen us as a business venture like any other, rather than buying into the passion & emotion football fans have for their club. As such, he's only ever been prepared to run us on the most cheeseparing, minimal cost lines that in his view are necessary for us to avoid sinking any further and for him to avoid losing any more money than necessary. In other businesses that might (tho not always) be regarded as "good business".

He's not, and never has been, a football man; nor has he ever had the large fortunes that some other owners have had - you need one or the other, if not both, for professional football clubs these days to be up there at the top.

Obvious & sad that it's mostly about the money now - we were a great club because of the attitudes, passion & judgement of the Cobbolds & how they ran things back in the day. I can barely raise a jot of enthusiasm for the Prem & League generally & how they are run now, only for ITFC.
