It's not wrong to say that, but that kind of attitude assumes that there's no way of over-achieving relative to finances available - which plenty of clubs do do, because they have a clear structure off-field that allows them to make the most out of their resources, be it focusing on youth and creating pathways to the first team, buying players from league one and selling for a profit, or looking for bargains from Europe.
I'm not saying we'd have walked the Championship even if we'd had a proper footballing structure in place, but there was a better chance we wouldn't have seen everything at seemingly all levels of the club go so catastrophically wrong with one poor managerial appointment.
Edit - my point, if I have one, is that Evans seems like he understands what has gone wrong - I think only time can tell us if he really has learned or not. [Post edited 7 Aug 2019 14:39]

People need to have a sit down, clear their minds and then reflect on the fact we are now a THIRD division team that will spend something like TEN to FIFTEEN MILLION on player wages this season.
That is absolutely mental.
Evans bought the club and was prepared to probably invest £5m or so a year over a couple of years, where he reasonably assessed that would buy us a couple of extra players to improve the squad enough to have a decent chance of going up.
Football then went absolutely nuts in those couple of years, to the point where Ross McCormack (one who has done very little since) and Britt Assombalonga (who gets 12-16 goals per season) were worth £13m and £15.5m!
Players like Adam Webster are going for £750k to the Championship and leaving it for £22m not long after.
Evans has choices. Either keep us on an even keel and fight against the odds to keep us up, spend an insane amount of his own money to not even bridge the gap, spend an even more insane amount of money to bridge the ever increasing gap - with no greater chance of success in reality or swallow huge losses and sell us to someone else - who can then do either of those three things.
We are just one of the victims in the football lottery that was everything getting mental in a short space.
As a result big clubs like Sunderland and Portsmouth may now never catch minnows like Bournemouth. Most of it was down to luck on where you were at the time it all went nuts. |  |

We were relegated nearly 20 years ago.
Since then Norwich, Leeds, West Brom, Aston Villa, Derby, Middlesbrough, Swansea, Hull, Blackburn, Stoke, Birmingham, Wigan, QPR, Reading and Bolton from last seasons Championship have all been in the Premier League since us so would have come back into the division ahead of us in terms of finances.
Norwich, West Brom, Aston Villa, Middlesbrough, Swansea, Hull and Stoke have all come down fairly recently comparatively.
These teams get £100m a season, then come down and get £75m and then £50m. They have about £200m head start on us from PL money and parachute payments. That is twice what Evans entire debt is! Just from one season in the division.
That's almost half the teams in the division when you add in teams like Huddersfield, Cardiff and Fulham as well (with two going the other way).
Seriously, how are any clubs who haven't had Premier League money supposed to compete. You have to get lucky, have everything come together and do what Sheffield United did.
Something Evans probably hoped would happen if Hurst had got some lower league players gelling and firing.

Harrison has a poor season and yet we still got £450k (or saved £450k) by letting him go. I'd say the odds are in the favour of buying clubs that overall they'll make a profit. | |
