"Pre-season this year has involved a lot less running and a lot more ballwork than it did last summer."

All that running in pre-season, with Doig shouting abuse at everyone, and yet we still couldn't play for 90 minutes at a high level.

Roberts Out to Grab Opportunity With Both Hands 16th Jul 2019 06:00
Forward Jordan Roberts says he’s working hard in pre-season to ensure he can take his opportunity if and when it comes once the Blues' League One campaign gets under way. 25

Interesting.

I was talking to a former Kiwi Pro rugby player at a cricket match recently.
He told me that pretty much all of their training is done with a ball in hand. For him, the ball is an extension of his arm.

Assumption is to make an ass out of you and me. Those who assume they know you, when they don't are just guessing. Those who assume and insist they know are daft and in denial. Those who assume, insist, and deny the truth are plain stupid. Those who assume, insist, deny the truth and tell YOU they know you (when they don't) have an IQ in the range of 35-49.

Its basic even in kids coaching. Why would you have lots of running when you could have running with a ball...

Agree.
It's the same in cricket now as well.

Strength and conditioning is also very important.

For all the criticism of Hurst's methods, he had that Shrewsbury team mega fit the year before, issue is who went on pre season tour last year:

Gerken, Emmanuel, Vincent-Young, Chambers, Kenlock, Chalobah, Adeyemi, Dozzell, Ward, Folami, Garner. Wright, Vincent-Young, Woolfenden, Spence, Cotter, Nydam, Skuse, Downes, Roberts, Sears, Waghorn.

Then compare that to the 18 that played against Norwich after the window shut:

Gerken, Spence, Pennington, Chambers (c), Knudsen, Edwards, Skuse (Chalobah 45), Nolan, Graham (Ward 81), Walters, Jackson (Harrison 84). Unused: Bialkowski, Downes, Edun, Kenlock.

8 players from the 18 went, 2 of whom were unused subs.

So we never got to see if his methods worked.

It's most important to train with the ball from 5 to 11...that's the key age for ball control and development.

Not saying it isn't important after that stage but as Joe states strength and conditioning then starts to set teams apart along with team work and tactics.

I do U13s and first half hour of any session they have a ball each or minimum 1 ball between 2.

All men and women are created, by the, you know the, you know the thing.

Absolutely right FlimFlam...as it should be.

But the point is that 5 to 11 bracket is the most vital time for developing ball skills.

In the modern game, strength and conditioning is generally very good now particularly as you go up the divisions. Of your trump card is going to be strength and conditioning you are in really big trouble from champ upwards. Even L1 it will be a high standard of fitness but it may have given his side a small.edge in L1.

I remember reading a Jose Mourinho biography and love him.or hate him he's been the most succesful coach out there for around 2 decades. Everything he did on training field involved the ball.
