Which bit of the run chase did they not understand?

Supposedly trying to minimise damage to net run rate. But if they'd gone for it, might have secured the points. Possibly the pitch is more difficult than England made it look.

Had not thought of that, might explain it. However, I would have thought that they are in little danger of not getting into the semis. Their final two games are against Bangladesh and Sri Lanka. They simply did not look like they fancied the run chase.

If they had been more positive in opening 10 overs (just 27 runs) and the final 10, they could have got the runs. Only 31 runs short.

Odd approach.

NRR may come into determining opponents in the semis.

Perhaps after their slow start, Dhoni decided they couldn't do it. But what was really odd, was the Indians did actually get up to England's run rate at one point. OK, we had a couple of big overs in the final five, but Dhoni (and others) can do that too.

Someone pointed out India have a long tail and another wicket would have got England in amongst them.

Or perhaps they just really don’t want Pakistan to make the semis so were happy to give us the win 😉

Can't imagine top-level sportsmen (a highly competitive breed) throwing the match deliberately for a reason like that. Taking a long view for strategic reasons in a competition, maybe.

In any case, it would be a risky policy - England are a far more consistently dangerous side than the mercurial Pakistan.

Taking the pace off the ball at 10 runs an over required killed any chance India had no boundaries.
Pity’s afghan did think of that.

Maybe a big key in the rest of the tournament from now

Well, they weren't when Kohli and Sharma started accelerating nor when Pant and Pandaya were in together. They certainly gave up at the end though.

I didn't understand Kohli complaining about the short boundary either - it is the same for both sides isn't it?

As for the net run rate argument, another point is that the rules in the semis mean if there is a no result the team that finishes higher in the group goes through. A sense of not losing too heavily outweighing attempting to win is possible.

Quite.

I did like the use of "full Australia" here too.

I think Dhoni likes a 'red inker'.

He's got a habit of batting for his average when the run rate gets too high.

Assumption is to make an ass out of you and me. Those who assume they know you, when they don't are just guessing. Those who assume and insist they know are daft and in denial. Those who assume, insist, and deny the truth are plain stupid. Those who assume, insist, deny the truth and tell YOU they know you (when they don't) have an IQ in the range of 35-49.

He's having a proper whinge about it:

Nothing stopping them attempting to hit sixes over that boundary as well.

What happened to all the English support? Just read a report that says the Indians outnumbered the English 8 to 1.

I've been to ODIs where we have played teams from the subcontinent. I always joke that there must be loads of charter flight leaving from [insert nearest airport to ground] to Delhi, Calcutta, Lahore, etc after the game. Done very much tongue in cheek as these fans make for a great atmosphere in the grounds and those I have sat hear have always been knowledgeable, passionate and good company/banter - especially Indians and Sri Lankans.
