I used to... and like you would easily get through a bottle. Can't face it now. Would wreck me the next day.

Since my GF got me onto whiskey/water/whiskey... I can have a pleasant boozy evening and not feel terrible the next day.

If that's the one and only time you've tried red wine then it's probably not for you.

Well it looks like a duck, it sounds like a duck. Nope, dunno what it is.

What in his post leads you to think it's his one and only time?

Sounds like a man who's had enough to me.

Ok then, the post reads like there's only one red wine.

"The stuff". It's a drink, and it's called red wine.

Well yes, a 2007 Chateau neuf du pape is practically the same as the McGuigan Classic Merlot from Asda, why pay more than a fiver?

Shoulda had a biscuit instead. A nice as wine is, especially red, for me it's a one way ticket to a night on the gaviscon.

I like it a lot, but don’t drink it often because er indoors drinks white. I’ve been to many a wine tasting, stayed in Bordeaux, drunk gallons of the stuff over many years I still haven’t the faintest idea about it. I leave that to those that think they know about it. For me it’s either mmm that’s nice or ‘could be better, but never mind, crack on’!

I like a good cabernet sauvignon, especially the £3.59 one in Tesco.

Pour a third of a bottle then top up with own brand cola. Jobs a good ‘un.

I had a glass or two of very nice Tamnavulin sherry cask single malt last night while watching Le mans and would recommend it. (Tamnavulin and Le Mans BTW)

Sometimes I wish I'd stayed off it. Think I might do when my GF comes back from the States. It's not really doing me any favours. Although writing when slightly half cut can be fun!

I used to hate red wine until I tried a Rothschild Pauilac, they wanted my business. Wow was my head turned to quality.

Now we don't buy certain reds under £15. Clarets mainly.

I'd take a trip to Majestic. They know their stuff. Try a Beaujolais, nice and light. Spend a tenner and hopefully you will pleasantly surprised.

Many will come back on this and say you can get good wine for a fiver.....yes is you want generic stuff, blended, and shipped in tankers to a bottling plant. That stuff is taken from an unknown number of different vineyards and blended to taste 'generic'. Nowt wrong with that, but it's not the best.

The stuff I'm steering you toward is bottled at the vineyard.

Mrs H and I used to skip going out for supper and buy a £40 bottle instead. Some nice cheese and you've scored a worldy.

Bit like saying all football is cr@p because you've seen the European Cup Final - or any of the women's world cup games. Or even all ball games because red wine encompasses so much as a label.

Using a standard bottle of wine as a guide, how girthy are you exactly?

Red wine gives me a terrible hangover. Stopped drinking a while back. White wine isn’t significantly better to me either.

Stick with the bitter, cider and rum.

I understand this. Buying a bottle of something you really enjoy and savouring it. I don't get the people who go out with the intention of getting pissed out of their heads or people who have targets for how much they drink (one poster on here claimed to 'aim' for one pint every 20 minutes on a match day).

I like a couple of pints of Adnams bitter or a pint of Broadside but after that i've usually had enough.
