Shops/businesses you no longer see 10:30 - Jun 6 with 5416 viewsuefacup81

I was just remembering the old fireplace showroom that used to be on St Helen's Street by the junction with Grimwade Street (a couple of doors up from Golding's Butchers). You don't see places like that any more...

What other businesses seem to have dropped off the face of the earth in the last generation?

When I was a kid, there was a Raleigh bike shop somewhere on the outskirts of Ipswich where my parents used to take me to choose my Birthday present.

Cant remember the name of it, was a Raleigh specialist. Ring any bells with anyone?

I'm thinking either the one where Sainsburys on Hadleigh Road is, or up on the Heath Road/Foxhall Road roundabout?

A couple of other categories I remember:

Specialist greengrocers - you hardly see those any more. I remember we'd always get our fruit and veg from Robertsons/Robinsons on St Helen's Street, and the old chap there would always give my sister and I a carrot to munch on for the walk home.

The Scout Shop - used to be on Tacket Street?

Proper junk shops - like that place up by the John Bull on Woodbridge Road.

Does anyone remember David Copperfield's magic shop in Ipswich? It was only there for a few days before disappearing.

I went to primary school with the lad who's dad that run that waggon as it happens. Lovely family but I did lock myself in their toilet by accident once.

I remember the Ipswich Collectors' shop on Crown Street in the late 80s - that's where I used to buy alot of old programmes. And the stamp collectors' shop at Cytes Gardens near the Willis building.
Galaxy models too, a great shop.

There are still a few of them about - one on corner of Spring Road and Cauldwell Hall which is a decent size showroom, another one down opposite the old Loch Fyne restaurant. Sure there are more too

Kitchenware shops, like Spoils what used to be in St Matthew's Street. Lovely little place. We did have a similar one open in Tacket Street called Grabs but it only lasted a few months which was a shame.

There's Countrylife Stoves on Duke Street.

If anything those fireplace shops have taken off over the last few years, what with every middle class wannabe wanting a wood burner.

As a very young kid in Blaxhall there were three shops, none now.
The main village shop, one I think more of a greengrocers and then there was one that was basically a sweet shot in a blokes living room, think it was Mr Reeve’s or something like that.
I think I’ve said before but Mrs Runnacles in Wickham Market - you won’t find a better cake shop, or even a decent one anymore.

All the music shops have pretty much gone.

Used to be rex records, compact music, Andy's music, virgin, hmv, out of time, Ipswich record and tape exchange.

Out of time is still going, hmv barely clinging on.

I was born underwater, I dried out in the sun. I started humping volcanoes baby, when I was too young.

Collector’s shop I remember well; really eclectic mix of stuff.

Printers shop on Norwich road next door to the Kfc/Revetts motorcycle shop. Got some extra pocket money during school holidays counting out and stapling raffle tickets books for the owner. Old printing machines with boxes of type face on little shelves and the smell of printer’s ink - once computers came along it was sadly doomed.
