Yet Another Jeremy Corbyn Thread 15:27 - May 24 with 6716 viewsGeoffSentence

Remember how tenuous his hold on the labour leadership was back in 2015. Plots upon plots to oust him, the media dead set against him, all sorts of attacks upon him from all quarters, some spurious, some furious.

And here we are now and he has seen off two Tory leaders, a Green Party leader, several UKIPs, a Liberal Democrat and Plaid Cymru.

Still he stands.

Don't boil a kettle on a boat.

I'm not sure people are commies in the street, and gammons in the sheets so much.

I think it is more to do with the cult of personality. When was the last time Labour had a really smooth operator who was perceived as widely likeable, and was able to promote a clear policy vision? Probably Blair. Even Cameron was pretty presentable to the public, certainly compared to May. Johnson appeals in this way, in the banter era, despite being an odious chunt.

Corbyn isn't any of those things, and when you combine the lack of action in combating his party's issues with antisemetism and his failure to back a second referendum it's not that surprising that many lefties like me are looking elsewhere with their votes.

Perhaps Tories are just more attached to their party and don;t deviate so easily, or perhaps they don't really have any other moderately conservative parties to vote for so stick with the Conservatives..

"Corbyn isnt any of those things"

Wrong. He is wildly popular with Labour members, young people, and the traditional socialist types. Blairites are very confused by him though.
I also think the Maximum Leader's policy vision is pretty straight forward and clear.

In the spirit of reconciliation and happiness at the end of the Banter Era (RIP) and as a result of promotion I have cleared out my ignore list. Look forwards to reading your posts!

Seriously, I was enjoying a nice, polite chat with J2 before you came in with your Kevin and Perry tribute act.

I'm sure he is. You're right, and I know he's incredibly popular among some Labour supporters. That probably won't be enough to get him in number 10 though.

Corbyn v Johnson/Gove is a clash for the ages. Genuinely diametrically opposed people who wont be able to stand one another. Just the way it should be.

What I actually did was disagree that Corbyn's no closer to no. 10 than he was when he became Labour leader.

Sorry if my difference of opinion upset you. You're really uptight at the moment.

I actually agree a bit with you here. He's been trying to hide as much as possible. Can't do that when you're campaigning to be the boss.

I think he can. Momentum are excellent at controlling the media - all of it including social media. He will be in No 10 in no time and I suggest any tory idiot that gets the job now doesn’t bother unpacking. The tories are done and opposition to Corbyn will fragment. The best the collective opposition can hope for is a hung parliament.

The problem for Corbyn will be when he gets his feet and El Gatto under the table. He will then have to do something. Given his beliefs and what Momentum seem to be looking to do, that is a scary prospect!

The media is, on the whole, massively against Corbyn and the left-wing. That's a huge problem for our society with its creep towards some of the more American right-wing policies and attitudes.

And of course why Blair shifted the party to the centre and even centre-right in some areas. Currying favour with a generally very poor and reactionary media, and chasing the votes of those who've been spoonfed these narrow views, is why we've got such pointless politics today and long-term problems around the UK that we just haven't addressed.

Well that's just nonsense. Back then people weren't remotely worried. Glassers said he wasn't a threat.

He's definitely closer to being in number 10.

As badly as the Tories are doing in the polls, Labour are polling 24/25%. They polled 40% at the General election.

With the Tories in utter chaos surely he should have a commanding lead in the polls?

Labour were in the mid 20's when the 2017 General Election was called too. Corbyn is pretty awful at the day-to-day stuff but he's brilliant at campaigning.

I don't think you can continually say the polls aren't accurate. A few have been off no doubt but they are still the best barometer we have and shouldn't be dismissed.

What else is left to form an opinion if you dismiss the polling?

It will be interesting to see if he is actually brilliant at campaigning or whether he was an unknown quantity back then which took the public by storm but doesn't have that factor second time round.

Guess we will find out in the next 12 months.

I'm not sure whether he'll be anymore of an unknown quality now than he was back then. He was a left wing firebrand, he is a left wing firebrand. Not having a clear stance on Brexit, should there be an election before it's sorted, might hurt him badly though.
