Does a statue really cost £110k? 17:12 - May 21 with 4155 viewsSimonCleggsNeck

Seems a bit steep and at the rate its going at I doubt we will ever reach the target.

I thought Sir Bobby's one was nearly half that price!

It is going to be much larger than the other statues though.

It takes a very skilled person, who is presumably in demand because of his stunning work, a year to make.

That's got to pay his salary of say £40k.

You then have all of the materials, which must cost a fortune, the specialist tools which need to be purchased, in his case probably upgraded and or maintained, transport costs moving the materials about, getting the statue in place.

Not to mention anyone else that needs to be employed to help out and so on.

Very easy to see how it could costs that much.

The SBR statue was made 17 years ago. Prices have gone up a lot in that time.

£110k in 2018 is the equivalent of around £70k in 2002 ( http://inflation.iamkate.com/ )

Have to admit to not knowing how long Bobby has been there, now I know basically since I started going.

Do we know how long Sir Alf has been there?

A council in South Yorkshire spent £6k on a bus stop on a road where no buses run. We live in expensive times.

I know that was then, but it could be again..

If you look at one or two of the aberrations outside football grounds you should be grateful that the statues of Sir Alf and Sir Bobby are so good and such fitting tributes rather than tragic attempts to provide a true likeness to less well known football characters from the past. We are fortunate to have the same sculptor working on Beattie's statue, I think it sounds altogether reasonable.

This. As well as Sir Alf and Sir Bobbys statues, Sean Hedges-Quinn also created the statue of Nat Lofthouse for Bolton, and recorded the process in a book. Based on that, I reckon 110k is very cheap

Odd comment when it has got to £80k so quickly since fundraising really took off.

Exactly. We are lucky to have a craftsman in our ranks like Coach. I think he did the Bob Stokoe one at Sunderland, running across the pitch in 73’. It really captures the moment and movement, and I’m sure Beatties will too. An ‘action’ statue as opposed to SAR and SBR’s. If anyone saw that one that Southampton put up a few years back they’ll realise how good our man is at what he does.

And yet it is not the worst, and Newcastle paid more than twice what our sculptor is asking for one of them:

Quite. The level of artistry needed by these sculptors to capture the essence of a player in stunning relief is....well, frankly, priceless.

I think it should have a hanging ITFC bottle opener.
An extra £5 added to the amount won't hurt anyone.

I read through that the other day and was just about to post, it's fascinating the process and clear that £110k isn't over priced!

His statues are brilliant, I haven't seen any better - a true master of his craft.

He is related to a tiler we use - he had been at the Leicester game with the tragic accident and had met the chairman a few times with a view to creating a statue of the whole squad for their league win. Had that not happened he would have been unavailable for the Beat as was something like 3 years work.
