4 if Chelsea win the Europa league. 5 if Arsenal do

No I don't think it works like that?

I thought they had a rule where if you finish outside the top four the year you win it, you qualify again and 4th place would miss out instead which seemed pretty unfair

Alcohol is the answer but I can't remember the question!

We are talking about a competition called "the Champions League" and saying it is unfair that we would not get 5th place into it.

I know why more than just the Champions get into it, but surely there must be a more apt name for the competition. I quite like "the Champions, nearly Champions and a few others League".

The European Super League, just say it!

There are many on here who will think the format of the Champions league and Europa league are great as they've never known anything else and that's fair enough. As an oldie I can categorically say that when the then European cup and Uefa cup were in their original form they were so much more harder to win. No groups, no seeds, just play who you were drawn against and the European cup was Champions only.

If Chelsea win the Europa League then the third place team in Ligue 1 (currently Lyon) will qualify for the group stages of the Champions League rather than having to go through the qualifying stage. I don’t think the Champions League winners place gets awarded to anyone if both teams have qualified already through the league.

Unless they’ve changed it I think you’re right. The year Chelsea won the champions league they finished outside the top 4 and qualified for it at the expense of Spurs who had finished 4th (and led to Redknapp leaving if I’m not mistaken)

The way UEFA are making it so much more accessible and wanting more clubs involved from the best leagues in Europe, all 20 EPL teams perhaps?!

There was a discussion on TalkSport during the early hours that there is a proposal in the pipeline to shake up the Champions League format, but it's only in its early stages of planning. Listening to the discussion, it suggested it's going to make the competition very elitist with the same big sides involved season on season from the major leagues and less involvement of minor leagues across Europe regardless if they are champions or not. In a nutshell it just seemed to me it was heading for a European Super League.
