While true, exactly how far back do you take it......Bush/Blair......or further/not so far? Perhaps we should just hold people accountable for their actions in the present and work on how we stop the cycle...easier said than done.

Can't we find some island in the middle of the Atlantic that we could pack all these people off to so that they can the rest of their pitiful lives happily hate-f*cking each and allowing the decent majority to get on with their lives?

That's an odd post. There's nothing M14 said that can't be applied to the present hate cycle (people like our own glorious Tommeh, for example). And are you suggesting we have to go back to bush/blair to look for the roots of white supremacism?

RIP the 40. Horrible day.

Forty people have died in a terrorist attack in New Zealand. on 07:44 - Mar 15 with 3276 viewsWeWereZombies

There was a minor incident a couple of days ago when a Green Party member was punched in the face whilst on his way into Parliament House in Wellington, a 47 year old shouting out things about the United Nations was arrested.

https://www.bbc.com/news/world-asia-47565792

However this attack is much more serious and the arrest of an Australian as one of the four who look directly responsible for the attack and who is described as 'extremist right-wing violent terrorist' does make you wonder if there is an overt campaign against 'liberal and progressive' New Zealand as part of the generally worsening political climate around the world or whether this is just the result of mentally unstable people being tipped over the edge by too much false and spiteful social media.

It’s now 49 sadly.

It’s almost like there was a bloke in the 1930s who was quite keen on white supremacism. Adolf someone?

The problem is that the rise of the far right has, once again, largely been ignored or downplayed. Too often far right hate speech is conflated with 'legitimate concerns' about immigration and Islamic fundamentalism. There are mainstream politicians who occasionally peddle rhetoric that panders to the far right. On the rare occasions I glance at the Mail or the Express it is clear their sole aim is to stoke white, right wing anger at whichever 'other' group is fashionable at the time. No lessons ever seem to get learnt.

In answer to your question the roots would be way further back than that.
As I said I agree with the broad sentiment he expresses, cause and effect but the answer requires somehow breaking the cycle in the present rather than spiralling back through history imho.
What do you regard as the start point of "the present hate cycle?" My presumption was that he was meaning Islamic fundamentalist terror leading to right wing nationalist terror but don't know if that would be accurate.......anyway at the moment this is of no great consequence and I was/am not looking for a row!

Awful. Hits home all the more when it's NZ (that may have more to do with my narrow view of NZ than the reality though. Ever NZder I've met has been as been solid as a rock).

Kenny Everett summed it up......."Round 'em up, put 'em in a field and bomb the barstewards".

It's an unreal scenario in NZ. Poor people.

Assumption is to make an ass out of you and me. Those who assume they know you, when they don't are just guessing. Those who assume and insist they know are daft and in denial. Those who assume, insist, and deny the truth are plain stupid. Those who assume, insist, deny the truth and tell YOU they know you (when they don't) have an IQ in the range of 35-49.

While that last statement is indubitably true, it is most often the softest targets - innocent of any direct involvement - who are the victims.

We need to take the threat of the far right seriously, just look at this response from an elected Australian politician:

"Australian Senator Fraser Anning is being widely criticised for a statement he's released on the attack. The independent senator for Queensland says the "real cause of bloodshed" is immigration which "allowed Muslims fanatics to migrant to New Zealand in the first place"."

Populist governments (and presidents) across the globe have, at the very best, failed to act on the rise of Islamophobia in the right and, at the worst, tacitly encouraged it by their words and actions.

Fundamentalist Islamist groups will be delighted this morning.

Bit difficult when none of the four arrested in Christchurch were on a police watch list according to Commissioner Mike Bush, the man in charge:

'Mr Bush confirms the suspects were not known to the police.

"Part of our investigation ought to be to look back to ensure that law enforcement didn't miss any opportunities to prevent this horrendous event," he says'
