Special Report: How a soccer agent and Chinese tycoon planned to trade in player 08:23 - Jan 5 with 1152 viewsDurovigutum

What Mendes and Guo didn’t publicly reveal then, or since, was that they also envisaged creating a network of clubs and soccer academies in Europe and buying and selling players, emails and internal presentations related to the deal show. Such a network would enable the partners to sidestep a ban on investors buying stakes in players and trading them. With the help of top agents like Mendes, such trading could capture profits that might otherwise go to assist smaller clubs.

Trading and representing players, Fosun believed, according to an internal presentation from 2015, was the only sustainably profitable part of the soccer industry.

The EU has been in a perfect position to regulate football in Europe and has sat back and let it be ruined by greedy agents and players! We are left with teams who can no longer afford to compete, and financially ruined clubs who can no longer afford to pay their players!

Indeed, but should have been done decades ago. It took many years for the authorities to crack down on the pretty naked corruption in FIFA (which was actually illegal rather than merely immoral). Having that amount of money sloshing around creates a power and leverage of its own.

Football really needs to become a sport again, rather than a pretend business.

Good Lord! Whatever is it?

That isn't entirely true is it?
The EU has tried to stop player trading hence the bosman ruling.
There have also been attempts by European football authorities to prevent 'silly wages' and financial fair play
wealthy clubs & owners have been very active in ignoring or fin ding ways round rules when introduced.
& whe there was an attempt in England to retunr clubs to the fans, wasn't it the Chairman of ITFC who went flat out to prevent that happening?

How many clubs / owners i England have completely ignored FFP?

Couldnt agree more! The only way to start to fix this is wage caps, which will first flush out the greediest players!

The Bosman ruling gave players even more power! The FFP rules demonstrably does nothing to limit the astronomical wages of players! They have failed and if anyone is actually interested in ‘sport’ then the wages need to be capped!

The French FA did cap wages
Wages in most leauges are lower than the PL
The Bosman ruling gives power to players but not necessarily clubs or agents
FFP in England has been ignored more than anywhere else

Very difficult to tackle from the bottom end. People will always find a way around things.

The supply from the top needs to be cut off, i.e. the torrential flow of money from TV companies into the game. It would be a thorny issue - not least in terms of political ideology - to restrict the rights of football associations/leagues to sell their own media rights in a free market. It would mean taking a privately-owned sport into national/EU ownership.

Or, alternatively, FIFA could stop being a money grubbing, kickbacks-for-your-mates outfit and actually regulate the game.

As in so many areas of life, people cry "Look how well we're doing!", when all that's really happening is rampant inflation.

Why has England been allowed (by UEFA, FIFA) to flout the rules?

Well said! The US approach is interesting, as they have one of most socialist approaches to sport where they let the worst performing clubs (or franchises) each year to pick the best young players (subsidised by the rich) and give them to the poor to sell back to the rich! So supposedly the most evil money grabbing country on the earth somehow has this system which protects their sport.... It works because the US is the dominant area for these sports and doesn't have similar competing nations, unlike Europe!

Good question although having read the book Foul it may well be the overall corruption in the game?

Listening to the radio this morning a point was made that Barroness Brady @ West Ham gets a salary of circa £800k + consultancy fees of crca £400k from the club
This was relative to the sum of circa £700k West Ham charge parents for their kids to be mascots.

The fact is the English game has become rotten

& from the point of view of te poorer clubs the loan system has mae things much worse
