It just seems that every corporate entity will make as much effort as possible to be seen to be remembering, lest anyone accuse them of disrespecting the fallen.
It's probably the same reason why football clubs will have a 'remembrance game' in late October because they're not playing at home on Armistice Day.
I don't see any issue with commemorating the fallen in a dignified way on the specific day, but to take it to the lengths it's taken to these days almost seems like a sort of fetishisation. |  |

Those men gave everything, not necessarily through informed choice. And for me, Remembrance Day is purely and simply about those men, of whom very few remain. It's a sobering thought for me that the old men of my youth were WW1 veterans, and the blokes over 35 or so were probably WW2 veterans. Now there are none of the former, and very, very few of the latter. There are unlikely to be large, civilian armies ever again, for which those of you who are young should be very, very thankful indeed.

Not only were the National Service/Conscription era armies completely different, so to were the wars they fought in.
Nowadays those who sign up for the armed forces know precisely what they're getting into, the risks that entails, and the nature of what they'll be doing. | |

Stuff like this sums up the commercialisation of it all, I think.
I would imagine stuff like this isn't so much RBL having the idea, but a badge company approaching them and saying "we can do these for you for £1 a pop, and you can sell them for £3 a pop. Bingo, instant £2 profit".
All of this is borne out of suppliers seeing an easy target, rather than a genuine desire for remembrance. | |

So your views are valid in a way but are you saying that the Regular servicemen and women who gave their lives for the cause of freedom during both wars and since mean nothing?
Yes when we signed the papers we knew their was a risk that if it came to it we might not come home! To say that these people are not worth remembering is really a bit sad.

Very well said sir. This is the most visible sign of it, and whilst i wear a poppy and am proud to do so, I am also a strong believer that those who choose not to, for whatever reason, should not be singled out for any attention.
In addition to remembering those who have served in our armed forces and made the ultimate sacrifice, in all conflicts, I also remember those members of the commonwealth military who found themselves embroiled in conflicts on our behalf, whether children of India, Australia, Belize, Canada, Sierra Leone, etc and whatever religion, colour or whatever else may allow some to see them as different.
