Hypothetical question 08:36 - Aug 13 with 1871 viewsmrshallisfit

Jan 2000 - town in good position to get promoted either automatically or via play-off. Burley goes to board and asks for cash to buy Marcus Stewart. Board agrees. Ipswich buy him for 2.25 million (7-10 today).

If PH does well and is a vaguely similar position in 2 years time - any remote chance of the same happening again?

See January 2015 with us in play offs and ' investment ' then?

The lesson from that has hopefully sunk in.

Altho in 2015 I think there was another element, namely McCarthy's unwillingness to buy players he thought not good enough or overpriced.

Good Lord! Whatever is it?

Well I'd also be unwilling to buy players I thought were not good enough?!

Why would you buy them otherwise?

What a random question which no-one on here can answer?

Likewise, what would have happened if the board or Burley had said no to Marcus Stewart?

It wasn't a criticism. Some managers seem to want to go out and spend for the sake of it, some fans demand that. Altho I sometimes think McCarthy erred a little on the side of parsimony.

Plus the pricing in the Championship, the gulf between the very good/very expensive and the average/cheap or free is much wider than in 2000.

The difference is the cost of players wasn't out of the realm of our finances for us, if it were now, can you see us spending £15m odd on the current top scorer in the championship and potentially one of our rivals?

To directly answer the OP...
If the same thing should happen in 2020 I reckon Marcus Stewart would be delighted though I can't imagine why we would offer £2.25m for a 47-year-old.

Difference in 2000 we sold Kieron Dyer to Newcastle for £6m we still only spent £2.25m on Marcus rest went on the short fall of running the club

Not so - John McGreal, Jermaine Wright and Gary Croft (iirc) came in with the Dyer Money, the Stewart purchase was a gamble on getting up, he or Johnson would have been sold had we failed

Net spend of minus £2.3m that season. ;-)

I loved Marcus Stewart, but I'm not sure he could do a job for us now.

Edit: Or what Binner said.

This. I'm convinced had we invested then we'd have had an outstanding chance.
