Might sound like an odd question to throw out there of a Friday afternoon but spent my lunch break at work having the debate with a colleague about the lack of gay footballers that are out. I'm of the opinion that they're in an environment that doesn't lend itself to them coming out, where as he is adamant there's a disproportionately low number of homosexual footballers, for reasons he couldn't really explain. Said they would gravitate to other careers, which is why he believes it transcends to the stands too. I'm not sure about that, but of the 3 gay people I know, none have any interest in football. |  |

No. I don't think there's even a curiosity lurking in the corner of my conciousness either.
I think I was about 10-11 when I once went down the street collecting newspapers under some false pretext. And then took out all the page 3 from the Sun and decorated my room with them.
I reckon my sexuality was settled by that point.
I don't see why someone wouldn't be openly gay today. We're mostly beyond demonising people who are aren't we? |  |

I'd imagine a lower percentage of footballers are gay compared to Air Stewards, TV Personalities and hairdressers - but the number would have to be so many standard deviations away from the mean of the general population for their to only be one or two gay footballers that it's basically an impossibility.
There are at least 2 openly gay posters, but don't feel it's my place to post their names as draws attention to them when they probably don't want it. Also there is a transgender supporter in the North Stand who has posted here about it. |  |

I came to that conclusion, the reality is probably a bit of both. At the risk of stereotyping I would think your air host example is a fair one, there's probably a higher proportion of homosexual males than in footballer, but I'm sure there are professional footballers living in fear of coming out for what it might mean to the relationships with fellow players and rival supporters, as sad as that is. | |

I think the proportion of footballers that are gay is probably lower than the proportion of the wider population thats gay.
I also dont think it would be a problem if a footballer came out as gay. I think quite the opposite, I could see a large outpouring of support that would outweigh any minority that had a problem with it. |  |

Yes the fascination does seem a bit strange. I'm assuming it's because people think that footballers can't be open about their sexuality. That there's a systematic problem in the game. But from a personal level it doesn't matter and isn't anyone's business. | |
