10k in 56.27.... 3 mins quicker than the other time I attempted it. 20:33 - Jul 21 with 18583 viewsITFC_Forever

Yes, I know, look at me etc....

But after a major health scare in the family in recent months, it made me realise how important being fit and healthy is and that I was taking it for granted.... being virtually 16 stone and a complete couch potato wasn't really particularly fit or healthy, so I decided to do something about it. Lost a stone and feel fitter, so all good.

I salute you!! Recently took up running myself after many years of couch potato status, but haven't yet attempted anything beyond 5k - and I'm only just sneaking under half an hour for that!

Taking control of your health in such a way is a difficult step to take but it's worth it for potentially buying yourself additional lifetime, plus a huge self-confidence boost, especially when the PBs keep tumbling.

You'll get there in time, let us know when you do.

I can't wait to get running again, my ankle is still not quite right for it though.

The first time I got to 5k, it felt like a massive milestone, and was happy to keep at that distance for a while.

Got that down to around 27 mins and started adding another mile or so on, then realised half as much again was pretty much 10k, so a month ago I did my first one and tonight was the second attempt at it.

Heh - feels much like reading the things I want to be saying about myself very soon. I targeted building my distance up to 5k (with one eye on perhaps taking up parkrun sometime) then started doing that for every run from the beginning of this month and have just been trying to get the time down. Making some progress considering I think it took me over 33mins on the first go. Worked out a 4 mile route I'm thinking of trying next week so will hopefully go from there.

Different for every individual obviously but I think it'd take me quite a while yet to get as low as 27mins for the 5k! Do you know what your first 5k time was, and how long it took before you tried your first 10?

First 5k time was 28.44, took me a good couple of months to then build up to attempting a 10k.

When I first started, I was doing 2 miles, and stopping and walking two or three times - the first time I did that running all the way was another big milestone.

The feeling when completing a long'un is great ain't it

I think I prefer early morning (6/7am) runs to late night runs personally

Not immediately after - I just want to collapse somewhere for 10 minutes! But yes, it is.

Don't like early morning runs, still recovering from sleeping, much prefer it from 10am onwards, usually run after work, so around 6-ish.

I have a glass of water ready for when Im back home and then spend 15 minutes sitting in the garden. Then a cold shower. Helps to keep me refreshed as I aim to do the last KM of a 5 or 10k in about 4 minutes 15 seconds which of course leaves you breathing heavy and sweating

Brighton Marathon reopen their entries in October for April 2018... just saying!
Plenty of time to get yourself ready for it - and it's a great day out.

I ran for Cancer Research UK last year and not afraid to admit I had a little tear crossing the finish line - 1 for finishing and the other for who I was running for.

Whilst I would say my fitness is definetely above average, I definetely wouldn't manage to do that amount in that time.

Fair play to ye

That's a great effort!

I took up running in my mid-thirties and ended up doing a few half-marathons. Good runners always told me to run slower for longer and it was decent advice. Adding a little bit of distance now and again worked well.

I haven't run in ages now and, with extra weight and years, I know it will be tough, almost like starting again. I used to love the post-run afterglow though!

You've got me thinking about digging out those running shoes though so thanks for that!

When I used to run (I got up to about 16 miles) I decided to get a bike for some lower impact exercise. I found cycling much harder work and doing over 40K in that time seems sensational to me. Good work Benters!

Did the park run in 24:06 today. Absolutely chuffed with that as I was over 28 minutes in April.

I know that was then, but it could be again..

All on a bike i found in a garden shed that the old boy said i could have for £20 ! Back in 1982 the bike cost over £600 and he used it twice, didnt like cycling so he covered it over in his shed, and there it sat till i came along last year and told him i liked cycling !
