Living in Dubai 09:31 - Jan 18 with 1648 views | pbishop1799 | Hi Everyone, So I've recently been offered a job in Dubai, good salary... I'd be grateful if an of my fellow TWTDers could share their knowledge and experience of living/working there. I've not made my mind up yet. Place seems a bit 'marmite'. Cheers in advance!

I'm particularly interested in the following: - Cost of living - Renting a place - Lifestyle (does it get boring) - Interactions with other people, Emeratis and ex-pats - Public transport - Islamic laws, specifically in relation having a girlfriend. An other observations would be greatly appreciated.

Clean and safe. Tax free. Ultimately it all comes down to your motives, if the pay is high enough and you can set yourself up financially, then treat it as full time job. Just think of the evenings / weekends as work too. But I sure as hell wouldn't go there again unless I was making serious money. (Like you say - a marmite place)

Sounds fair, based on what a friend of mine who worked in Abu Dhabi next door as few years ago. He was doing it for the tax free money, pure & simple. Oh, and when he arrived, he quickly discovered that the job wasn't exactly as described during interview. But he stuck it out for the dough.

Cost of living £12 a pint (2011) Renting - nice apartment, was $5k pcm when I was there Lifestyle - boring as fook Interactions. Ex pat community - same as anywhere. Emeratis - look down their noses at all foreigners in my experience. Public transport. A very efficient metro service. But not extensive. Just one line Islamic laws. More relaxed than other parts of the UAE. Shouldn't be a major issue if you are sensible.

The main difference they found compared to their UK based job was that arabic clients expected them to work like a dog, every hour god sends. Also, working a 6 day week is not unheard of.
