[Blog] My World Cup Reflections
Written by Keno on Friday, 2nd Jul 2010 21:22

Well, the so-called Golden Generation ended up looking more like the Golden Girls and have come home. Although to be fair many of them have come home and gone straight on holiday. Does anyone else think it strange they seemed to have had them booked two weeks before the end of the tournament?

I will concede that England did not get the rub of the decisions on Sunday but amid all the controversy over the goal-line incident, the rumours of players falling out and debates over the formation, the plain simple truth was that the England team wasn’t good enough.

The teams that are doing well play with flair, passion, control, pace and a tactical flexibility that the England team lacked. This isn’t the first World Cup that has been said!

The England football team is starting to feel a bit like the old joke about the cricket team, in that is if easier to get picked than dropped and surely the time has come to start building for the future. Firstly the top teams should be encouraging home grown young players and looking to give them a chance, otherwise the 2014 World Cup and beyond could look very bleak.

As we reach the end of this competition, thoughts start to turn to the football that really matters. This World Cup malarkey is all well and good but the proper football that I, and I am sure most of you care about, is Ipswich Town FC.

Strangely enough when you think over the years about we haven’t been bad at giving the youngsters a chance. Had finances not dictated otherwise I wonder how far a team with build round Bramble, Dyer and Ambrose could have gone? Now it would be good if we can keep hold of Wickham and Smith rather than see them making up the numbers elsewhere.

Perhaps a few more could be encouraged to come through? We do seem to have let an awful lot of youngsters go in the past few years. You just wonder whether some of those who left would have been any worse than some of the ‘established’ players bought in and maybe, just maybe some of the current crop could prove more useful if given their chance.

And then there are those basic qualities shown by teams at the World Cup such as flair, passion, control, pace and a tactical flexibility. It would be nice to look back in a year’s time and reflect on a season where a Town team displayed them wouldn’t it?

In the case of Rooney, he has a property in Bermuda and either had a private jet or an open air ticket (I assume he flies first class rather than sit next to Fat Boz the overweight sweaty Man Utd fan from Bury in economy). He could book two days after the game and rearrange if England qualified so I don't buy the "isn't it odd" comment.

It is about time people and the press realise that the best players do not make the best team. Look at Sir Alf Ramsey in '66, dropped Greaves for the final and was widely chastised for it. We won. Sir Alf became a hero and everyone forgot about it…apart from Greaves.
