[Blog] The Longest Half Hour of My Life
Written by BaltachaFanClub on Monday, 2nd Nov 2009 18:46

Sixty-six minutes gone, and David Wright, puts Ipswich ahead against an under par Derby side, for the next minute or so, every town fan is in raptures, hugging their anonymous neighbour, slapping on the back of a person you barely know, and the players are celebrating too.

Now for the hard part, 24 regular minutes and a minimum of two and a half minutes due to substitutes, and injuries on top of that, and the obligatory extras.

I cannot be the only one who spent this time nervous, I do believe in our team, but after Watford and Sheffield United away to name but two, it is an odd feeling, but it’s not a new thing for a town fan. Remember Gillingham at home a few years ago? Hero Fabian kept the ball in preventing a corner, only to be dispossessed and concede in the last few seconds, losing the game 4-3.

Anyway, That’s beside the point, I stood in my North/Sir Bob lower seat, almost shaking, occasionally singing, occasionally shouting, but constantly nervy.

Wave upon wave of attack, we had our chances to finish it, and the longer it went on, the more likely heartbreak, I feel Disney has written our script up to now, we are that geeky kid who is constantly ridiculed until finally he amazes everyone to be (usually with mass makeover) the hero of the tale and gets the girl etc.

But our ridicule was from the press at our constant failures and our getting the girl was the final whistle, where so much air was dispelled with the sighs of relief we could have filled one million balloons.

I know I over dramatised the moment, but you have to admit, it was a strange feeling, everyone did play their part too, Asmir Begovic surely was considered immense and he dealt with everything needed, Alex Bruce was throwing in his trademark last ditch tackles, Liam Rosenior, Carlos Edwards, Alan Quinn, all ran their proverbial socks off, and Tamas Priskin nearly closed the deal, if only to be denied by former loanee Stephen Bywater.

But what of the forgotten men ? Damien Delaney hasn’t had the best of starts to a Tractor Boy career, but I defy anyone to tell me he wasn’t as awesome against Derby as awful in previous appearances.

And David Wright, a man who on deadline day (if you believe the rumours) nearly joined Reading, and has been in the wilderness for a long stroke, not only did he defend like a Trojan, but as Mr Keane pointed out, connected with the ball at a moment when everyone was thinking ' why is he in the box?', as so many times he has been the player who stays on the halfway line.

Anyway, I must stop now before I let my glasses get even more rose -tinted. Although I must add I spent the evening dressed as the grim reaper, and a remarkable amount of comments were made about the irony of being the lord of darkness when finally there has been a little light!

When four minutes were called out i think we all thought 'not again'? It would have been nice if priskin had finished it but that feeling of relief was one to relish, at least until tomorrow where it all starts again!
Can we posibly scrape another win tomorrow and if we do, are people going to start talking about play-offs?!
I for one will be open to the suggestion.
Big game against a side who've just remembered how to score goals...

thought the crowd was fantastic and didn't sense much nervousness, more a steely determination to see it through to the end and that was replicated on the pitch. Thoughts to derby though, hope things turn round for Clough junior and his team

If you thought that was a long time you should have been at Highbury for the last 15 minutes of the 78 semi final just after WBA pulled it back to 2-1. That quarter of an hour b4 warky scored added 2 years to my life

Good blog. I got so nervy that I could not watch the last few minutes.
It's been hell the last couple of months and living in Narj as i do has made it even worse.

Interesting although I believe it is spelt 'psychopath' not 'physcopath'. So by that I am assuming you are not an authoritive voice. However please do inform us all from your great wisdom what a 'physcopath' is. You must be one of those real fans we hear so much about.

Good blog, and I know what you mean! I started the game 36 years old, and I think I finished it knocking on for 40 ....

Now that the hoodoo has been broken, the next victory should come more easily, and hopefully with a little less tension!! And with any luck it will be at Reading so I can get leathered with a clear conscience and enjoy the cultural delights of London afterwards with more purpose, lol ....

KEANO!!!
